The "Uncle Toms" who run as Republicans are hated even more than a white candidate would be. There are no counterexamples in recent years, if there ever were any (remember the big hopes for Lynn Swann as PA Governor?).
If James pulls off the miracle upset, it will be white voters that pull him through.
