HONG KONG China officially opened the worlds longest sea bridge on Tuesday after Chinas leader, Xi Jinping, and local officials inaugurated the 34-mile structure, which crosses the Pearl River Delta to link Hong Kong with Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai.
The project, which includes sections of bridge and artificial islands linked by a four-mile tunnel west of Hong Kongs airport, went billions of dollars over budget and was delayed by two years. Chinese officials expect the bridge to significantly cut driving time between the two sides of the Pearl River, helping to achieve their vision of a Greater Bay Area, as China calls the effort to knit the regions cities more closely.
Plans for the opening ceremony were announced just days beforehand, apparently timed to coincide with Mr. Xis first trip to the southern province of Guangdong in nearly six years. Mr. Xis contribution to the opening event, on an artificial island holding Zhuhais port facilities, was modest.
I declare the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is formally open, he said, after comments by Vice Premier Han Zheng and local officials, including the leaders of Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong Province. Then digital fireworks exploded on a screen behind him.
Why was the bridge built?
The Pearl River Delta which includes the financial center of semiautonomous Hong Kong, the tech hub of Shenzhen and manufacturing areas in several other mainland cities, including Dongguan is a powerful economic engine for China. That status was bolstered by transportation projects like a highway linking the eastern cities in the 1990s.

I think I’ll wait a while before I trust going over/under that thing.
The ferries are just fine.

Congratulations China. That’s a very big deal. Maybe that will inspire the USA to do more on our own infrastructure.

One of my big amazements in China was when we went on top of one of the super tall buildings in Shanghai and looked down on the river that passes through the city. There was a nonstop parade of boats, barges and ships going in both directions, for as far as you could see. It was pretty impressive.

As in, how long can it stand up to ultraviolet light from the sun?

My niece went to China with a friend a few years back. They’re both fairly tall and blond. She said they were treated like rock stars wherever they went. Everyone wanted their picture taken with them.

That will be a scenic drive - for those who can afford the $21 one-way toll. Stateside bridge fans will have to make do with the 60-year-old 24-mile long Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana, which costs only the gas consumed in crossing it. I rather enjoyed that drive, the half-dozen times I’ve done it.

Yes. The bridge ends in Zhuhai, right in front of my house. No kidding. So, yesterday I had a meeting with some clients out in Guangzhou and there's this big commotion at my front gate. Police men, media folk, and all kinds of people with cameras and movie apparatus. They were out there taking picture and enjoying the morning air.
Yeah. It's a pretty big thing. Xi Peng came too.
The customs office is really tiny. It is the size of a little garage. But, it's all good. After the trip, I returned home. I didn't even bother to take any pictures. Just took my dog out for a walk to "do his thing" and then back in the house to chill.
My clients were looking at how their ECM's for the car computers in the new lamborghini's were coming along. So we went to the factory, and visited another one making some high end bathroom glass. All is good.
This bridge is cool, but I hope that it doesn't get too busy. I hate too much noise. That is why I moved to where I live in the first place. LOL.
