WASHINGTON A caravan of thousands of Honduran migrants is headed north in hopes of crossing the U.S. border. You may have heard some scary things about it. What's true and what's false? Here are five allegations bouncing around the internet that are definitely "alternative facts."
MYTH 1: It's being funded by Democrats.
Trump said at a campaign rally on Thursday that "a lot of money has been passing to people" traveling north from Honduras. A Republican from Florida, Rep. Matt Gaetz shared a short video that Trump later promoted of migrants being given cash and suggested that they were being funded by left-leaning activist and investor George Soros.
THE FACTS: There is no evidence the caravan is being led by anyone other than Hondurans.
Bartolo Fuentes, a former Honduran lawmaker and social activist, originally got the word out to Hondurans, calling them to meet at the San Pedro Sula bus station to leave the country. Guatemalan police arrested Fuentes last week in the middle of a crowd, shortly after Trump threatened to cut off funding to Guatemala and Honduras if they did not stop the caravan. The caravan now continues without Fuentes, with a handful of different leaders making logistical decisions about when to depart each city.
Immigration experts attribute the size of the caravan and the timing of its travel to cooler weather, as well as gang violence and political turmoil in Honduras after the country's contested presidential election last year.
"The reason that the caravans have been organized are to help protect Central American refugees and migrants as they make the perilous journey through Mexico and to highlight their petitions for asylum," said Elizabeth Oglesby, a professor at the University of Arizona's Center for Latin American Studies.
MYTH 2: "Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in."

Um, to "debunk" this "myth" one would have to trace where the funding is coming from.
Just saying "Uh, uh" is not debunking anything.
Did I miss something?

You didn’t miss a thing. This is a Three Card Monte. A shell game. Complete with smoke and mirrors.
Once again the MSN is lying and delving into half baked half truths to try and fool the public about this very real threat.
The caravans have been 'organized' so . . . SOMEONE or group of SOMEONES organized them.
Need more than a few pesos to put on a party that big.
But aren't the folks in Honduras poor?
Amazes me that reporters like these precious ones have the brain power to breath in and out.
nobody is getting paid.....riiiight
Clicked on the link. It doesn’t rebut either assertion. Merely says no evidence of terrorists in the column and then argues that illegals in general are not all criminals.
What they are demonstrating is that a country full of Hondurans is unlivable.
They may not realize that’s what they are telling us, but that’s what they are telling us.
What a bunch of garbage. Someone has to be funding this mob (I refuse to call it a caravan). Just because they have no “evidence” doesn’t mean it is not happening. Who is feeding this mob? Where are they sleeping? How are their hygiene needs being met? And who passed out the $$? Why don’t they investigate that? And as for criminals being intermixed, didn’t they arrest 100 ISIS members in Guatemala right before the invasion was organized? This is not a coincidence. This horde is growing by the day and who knows how many will be at our borders by the time it arrives.
Lies. More lies. Unless these chicks wrote this drivel a week ago.
Latest count shows 14,000. With more Mexicans joining by the minute.
Who pays his rent?
Nothing But Crap believes money grows on trees in Central America.
NBC wants you to believe a US President has no intelligence sources and just makes up shit out of thin air.
NBC has a poor memory, as Trump has been proven RIGHT time and time again and NBC has been proven to peddle Fake News.
My conclusion is NBC is a Myth. a fairy tale meant to scare little children into eating their spinach.
ALL of them are criminals.
One of the originators got caught and so another stepped in to continue the whole thing.
Sounds about right.
They claim to debunk 5 myths but offer absolutely no proof of any of their counter claims. No terrorists mixed in? Really, has anyone gotten documentation on all 4000, 7000, or whatever number we’re using today? So background checks and vetting have been done on an unspecified number of people in a third world country 1500 miles from our border? Really? Of course not. They have no way to substantiate their claim that there are no terrorists mixed in with the common criminals. Their other 4 myth debunking arguments are at least as weak if not worse.
Funny how the pictures in the article show children. The videos I have seen show predominantly young men. AP had a similar “Fact Check”. Shakespeare had it wrong. Should have been first we kill all the journalists (then the lawyers).
