U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-VT, is a communist. I learned this from a right-winger so extreme he can’t tell communists from socialists. Conservatives have now moved so far to the right that they label moderates as “socialists” and liberals as “communists.”
Sanders doesn’t hide the fact he’s a socialist and a liberal. He’s a relic of a bygone era before the Right turned “socialist” and “liberal” into pejoratives akin to “terrorist” or “pedophile.” I once told a sensible conservative that I prefer socialists to fascists. His response — “How can you tell the difference?” —sounded clever, but it’s essentially nonsense that showed a disconcerting lack of political discernment.
Socialism mainly involves economics; fascism combines politics and economics with authoritarianism, so it’s a bit of an “apples and oranges” comparison. Marx saw little difference between Socialism and Communism other than Socialism was the phase between Capitalism and Marxism. Fascism is Marxism with people in charge that realize neither Socialism nor Marxism can generate a healthy economy, and permit private ownership of business so long as it benefits the state. China is a perfect example. So was Pre-WW2 Germany.

Way back in 1966 I was on the USS R.A. Owens, DD-837. She was armed with the 5"/38 Naval gun. Our gunnery officer told us that this gun's fire control allowed it to shoot down incoming artillery shells. Any squid gunnery type out there to confirm my memory?
