CLEMSON, SC (WSPA) - 30 People were taken to the hospital Sunday morning after a floor collapsed during a party at an apartment complex.
It happened around 12:30 am at The Woodlands Apartments on Old Greenville Highway.
According to Clemson City Police Department, a private party was being held in the Clubhouse when at some point the floor collapsed and crashed to the second level of the building.
So far, there is no life-threatening injuries being reported.
The investigation is on-going.
Not a good idea to have a hungry hungry hippos party on a non ground floor!
Jam a building full of people, and get them jumping in time with the music, and the forces on the structure are significant. Add in some substandard construction, and youve got a recipe for disaster.
Exactly!
The roof!
The roof!
The roof is on the floor!
yep.
it’s an old recurring issue.
Depending upon the locality, many meeting / party places have a placard from the local fire marshal, stating the maximum number of people for the facility. It is there for this very reason as well as for evacuation purposes. Human nature being what it is, people will ignore this unless there is someone in charge and willing to get tough.
Not just for evacuation purposes. Places of public assembly designed, IIRC, for population loads greater than 50 people also have more stringent structural loading minimal standards which are to be designed with greater lbs/sf loads.
Yeah. A house party in Chicago that collapsed a porch cost me about 20k when they made the code change so that a party of 100 idiots could jump on a porch without it collapsing.
Happened recently in Texas. Hundreds of “youths” were packed into an upstairs apartment, loud music and dancing. The tenants below them complained, left the apartment and I think were going to the police when the entire floor collapsed. If the tenants (a couple of young girls, I think) had been home, they would have been killed.
Lol.Okay, you do that. I use my prayers on more important things.
A bunch of wild ass people dancing/stomping around in a small apt party causing a floor to collapse is not prayer worthy imo
I hear of shelves and cabinets installed by Our Mexican Friends coming off walls with a firm tug of the hand...I’ve seen some of their appalling electrical work and wonder why there aren’t fires every night.
I’m sorry for any injuries but these apartment buildings probably feature the worst of the worst in construction and materials.
All those young people were very fortunate: the outcome could have been much worse.
Reading the article, I was struck by how inarticulate the young college students were. Their sentences trail off without a conclusion because, I assume, they lack the vocabulary to convey their thoughts. Theodore Dalrymple wrote a very interesting article about this phenomenon.
That’s what amazes me about people who will allow a builder to use obviously illegal labor. Do they seriously expect a contractor who is willing to flout immigration and tax laws to save a few bucks, to adhere rigidly to building codes instead of saving a few bucks there as well?
I once heard a landlord speak of his ‘good Mexicans’ and his ‘bad Mexicans’...obviously a reference to their work product. One shudders to think of dwellings the bad ones worked on.
They say, it’s not a real party until something gets broken.
The theory of Tesla’s Earthquake Machine?
Probably used the same construction company that constructed this sentence.
Yes, the “journalism” of this story is even more pathetic than usual.
