The Telephone Consumer Protection Act bans the use of automated telephone equipment to send texts or calls to a persons cellphone without their permission except for emergency purposes, according to The Star-Telegram.
This is not the first time ORourkes campaign has faced backlash for claims of inappropriate use of text messages. The campaign came under fire in September for allegedly sending a text message to voters asking for volunteers to help transport undocumented immigrants to the polls, according to The New York Times.

Yesterday I received a text message from moveon.org asking me to vote in the California midterms..have absolutely NO idea how the heck they got my phone number just said “Hi this is Janice from moveon.org asking you to help defeat Republicans blaa blaa blaa” and to type in YES if I want to continue receiving texts so I just deleted it..never EVER received a message from them before and have absolutely NO idea how they got my number

I don’t believe you are correct, since they are using your private telephone number to reach you. As such, these “illegal contacts” are not “on-line.” Text messages to you phone are not like being on Facebook or some other social media outlet.

A smartphone like an iPhone or Google Android phone is for all practical purposes, a portable handheld computer.
I recieved one of those also, so instead of responding i sent them back that picture if Ted Cruz all tatted up and smoking.
The texter girl responded “Lol. And i will remove you from the list”.
I got one of those texts. Where do I sign up to sue?

So? When it comes to text messaging, it’s just a phone taking a “call” through it’s assigned number from another phone number. If the messaging comes to the smart phone via the Internet, that’s a different mechanism, but with IM it’s not!

Only a politician would think they could annoy you into voting for them. If I was truly on the fence about whom to vote for a robocall or spam text would assure my vote against you.

I hate to say it but I have received 5 or 6 text messages from different Republicans asking for money. I just ignore them.
