A 70-year-old Texas man was sentenced to more than seven years in prison after pleading guilty to buying an automatic rifle in the 1980s, CBS station KTVT reports. Alfred Pick of Plano purchased the M14 rifle at a gun show that was similar to the weapon he had as an Army lieutenant in the Vietnam War.
"This gun was very rare," Pick attorney Ryne Sandel told KTVT. "You see, at that time it was rare to see one, so he instantly, you know, had a connection to it."
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives raided Pick's house last year on a tip about the weapon, KTVT reports. Two weeks before the raid, his wife of 40 years had died of cancer, according to the station.
Pick and his wife had a gun collection of about 14 weapons, Sandel said. "Many of them were collector's items," he said

I’m thinking we’re missing something here....
Fully auto and had serial number filed off.
The jack-booted ATF thugs claimed their scalp... an Army vet.
Yep. The other side of the story..
I hope so. If not, this is a travesty of justice.
He must have been seen voting Republican, otherwise no harm no foul
Have to go to the end of the article...
BATFELMNOP walked full autos to Mexico that killed hundreds of people and nobody got jail time. This American exercises his 2nd Amendment rights and we can’t have that now can we?
we can only hope the same diligence used to find all the cartel and gangbangers with military arms get the same scrutiny. The trail cams from the border with streams of men coming across armed to the teeth by the cartels to protect the drug cargos show the extent of the problem.
Well there you have it. He could have robbed someone, shot someone, raped someone and gotten a lighter sentence. This is just wrong!
Having a firearm with a defaced/obliterated serial number is a separate crime.
And this guy gets celebrated by liberals for getting away with murder. WTF is going on?
Full auto, defaced SN, no BATF paperwork. NOT a good idea. Long after NFA ‘34(?).
The feds are pissed they didn't get to destroy it like most of the other M14s.
I used to know an ATF agent. One day he told me that they had to confiscate a full-auto from an old vet. He’d had the gun for decades and someone called him in.
My friend was actually sad because of what they had to do. They had two choices, destroy it or put in in the agents only ATF firearms Museum.
TO get jail time, there’s got to be more to the story.
Private sale? I dont think he bought it at a gun show.
I wonder who ratted him out. The article says the ATF acted on a tip.
Thus the “demand” for intergalactic background checks.
“Vietnam War veteran sentenced to 7 years in prison for buying “rare” gun in the 1980”
His crime was not having the $200 federal tax stamp. He didn’t pay the $200 tax.
After the disaster at Appomattox, I was afraid something like this would happen. The man is probably lucky he was not killed outright.
