The New York Police Department on Thursday night made its first arrest of a suspected member of the far-right group the Proud Boys, who were involved in a street fight in New York City last week.
Geoffrey Young, 38, faces charges of rioting and attempted assault, the NYPD confirmed to The Hill. He was allegedly involved in a brawl between the Proud Boys and masked protesters believed to be part of the left-wing group Antifa.
The fight happened after a speech by Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes at the Metropolitan Republican Club on the Upper East Side. The group is made up of self-described “western chauvinists” and is labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The NYPD was initially criticized after arresting some protestors but failing to make an immediate arrest of any Proud Boys members.
The NYPD released a video earlier this week asking the public for help in identifying suspects involved in the fight. The video showed a protestor throwing a bottle at the Proud Boys, who then responded with punches, resulting in a chaotic melee.

We've lost another right in this country. The right of self-defense.
He should change party affiliation. Then he would get to walk.

The mask wearing Antifags are never referred to as the far left wing radicals that they are.

Note the subtle use of language to smear the Proud Boys.
The Proud Boys are a “far-right group”.
But Antifa is merely a “left-wing group”.
So a reader might reasonably conclude that the Proud Boys are some sort of crazy anarchist group. And Antifa is just another left-wing organization, much like grandma’s Lady Democrats Club.
Bottle throwing and attacking masked AntiFa get to walk away.

Speaking of the Southern Poverty Law Center, I just looked it up. The SPLC lists the Proud Boys as a hate group. But they do NOT list Antifa as a hate group.

According to the SPLC, any organization to the right of the Communist Party is a “hate group”.
I won’t go into specifics but all parities were acting badly, and there were a lot more PB’s involved at the time of the incident. And if you had seen the rap sheets on some of the PB’s you might be a little less likely to defend them. That being said, I do not believe anyone will be charged with any serious crime here. The injuries don’t reach felony standard.
Should wearing masks to a riot be illegal?
No doubt there is plenty of guilt to go around.

That’s worth noting. In * some * ways the Proud Boys are like the Brownshirts of the 1920’s. But as of now they are just talking tough. On the other hand, Antifa openly advocates violence, and actually does violence.
On the Brownshirt scale, Antifa is way above the Proud Boys. But you’d never know that from most MSM articles.
