How about this deal: would it surprise anyone with a clue that Trump already has an agreement with Mexico in hand that allows for US troops to assist Mexico in protecting its *southern* border?
Nah, that 4D nonsense is just made up fantasy. The US has hundreds of military bases strategically placed around the globe, including many where we provide defense against possible invasion. But to apply those standards to a geographic neighbor and key link to controlling our actual border? Bah, we're doomed I say, doomed unless we mount automated machine guns and mow down the invaders.
What Trump is doing is so obvious, it's actually sort of painful to observe some who don't get it. Bad optics? Move it to MX. Narrow border? Move it to MX. Bad scenario ie refugees? Turn the narrative around to helping defend a country (MX) who has requested assistance.

Interesting to consider. But actually...
1. I think it’s good for Mexico’s police morale to tackle this challenge. Boredom is very dangerous in such a corrupt nation. Leading cause for coups.
2. It’s more a matter of will than of tech and training. Our bleeding heart liberals gush over violence while Mexicans are proud of their ruthlessness. Last I heard they like to cut up horses alive for dog food.
3. Then there’s prestige. It would hurt Mexico’s prestige if word leaks that they needed US assistance.
4. Most importantly, South and Central America despises any of their neighbors who appear too friendly to the US.
