Iran Deserves Credit for the Ruin of ISIS
The American Conservative ^ | October 17, 2018 | Scott Ritter

Posted on 10/18/2018 10:54:31 AM PDT by Colonel Kangaroo

Until recently the United States viewed the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, as a major threat to regional stability in the Middle East. Barack Obama made it a mission to roll back ISIS’s territorial and propagandistic gain, and Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to “kick ISIS’s ass.” The United States expended considerable effort, both military and political, in a campaign to defeat the terror group in Iraq and, to a lesser extent, Syria.

But there is also no doubt that the bulk of the effort came from Iran, not the United States. Without Iranian involvement, ISIS would still have a formidable presence in both Iraq and Syria....

Rather than relying on ISIS as a foil to blunt Iranian influence in Syria and terrorize its citizenry at home, the Trump administration should recognize the positive role that Iran has played in defeating ISIS. It should build upon that recognition to craft a wider regional peace process that both recognizes the realities inherent in Syria today and reduces the tensions that prompt Iran to lean forward in such an aggressive manner. Unfortunately, such thinking seems beyond the capabilities of Mike Pompeo and John Bolton. As such, America will continue to pursue poorly thought out policies with no chance of success without any thought to either cost or consequence.

I think it's safe to say that the author of the piece, Scott Ritter, did not help his chances to get a high-paying job at a well-endowed establishment think tank with this article.

That’s too bad because a job at Burger King is out of the question, too.

ISIS just kidnaped 800 people and threatened Russia, saying that they will kill ten per day until they get their demands met.

We should get out of the Middle East and let them kill each other. The only people Muslims hate more than non-Muslims are Muslims who belong to a different sect. Israel can defend itself. Let the Muslims have at their internecine fight.

The two main Muslim sects can balance each other out without help from the USA and expenditure of our money and blood.

From Wiki: “Before the 2006 midterm elections, The American Conservative urged its readers to vote for Democrats, saying, “It should surprise few readers that we think a vote that is seen—in America and the world at large—as a decisive “No” vote on the Bush presidency is the best outcome.”[4]

yeah because he a total idiot letting his ignorant Neo Isolationis poltical dogmas cloud his analyssi.

Iran had nothing to do with it. Both they, and the O admin did nothing about Isis funding itself with oil exports, until Trump starting making it a campaign issue in 2015. Once the US, and the West, started cut off the money, Isis died from the feet up. Without money to fuel it, terrorist groups die.

I never heard of the guy before but looking at the keyword entries, it seems like he has had quite a history. To me, two times convicted suggests more than an isolated lapse of morality.

What amazing is this idiot Neo isolationist dogma is still being spewed in a post 09-11 world.

The days of being able to hide out in “fortress America” and ignore the rest of the world are long over.

The 09-11 attacks demonstrated that they will come here if you do not deal with them there.

The United States >> CREATED << ISIS.

Utterly moronic ignorant drivel. Without even a shred of a hint of a clue of fact.

A more isolationist stance can help America’s relative strength. America only gets stronger by letting willing Russia and Iran incur the debt and loss of blood of balancing the Mideast. As MacArthur and Eisenhower believed, American strength is based on our economy, not how many wars and expenditures we have in Asia.

I erred. Ritter was arrested over two incidents several years apart, but only convicted once.

It safe to say your an idiot spewing slogans based on a blind allegiance to a failed Neo isolationist poltical dogma

You have not the slightest hint of a notion of a clue of a fact on this topic yet, almost 2 decades after 09-11-2001, you are still here arrogantly refuse to learn ANYTHING that challenges your willful poltical ignorance

“The bulk of the effort came from Iran”

Absolutely a lie.

Iran might come in ahead of the UK, but way, way behind Iraq, the USA and the Kurds. Most of what Iran did do, was actually done by Iraqi Shi’ite citizens, organized into militia units (Hashd al Shaabi). Iran provided some of their inaccurate rocket artillery, some pickup trucks and small arms, and paid some militia expenses. Probably no more than a few hundred Iranians took part as advisors.

You can call me wrong or ignorant, but I honestly believe that a more non-interventionist policy is best for America. Debt and blood never strengthened a nation over the long run. I agree with Douglas MacArthur who warned us to never get into a land war in Asia.

We should get out of the Middle East and let them kill each other.

The problem is that if we aren't killing them there, they get tired of killing each other and decide they miss killing us. So they come here to kill us. Best course is to eradicate them but I don't know how you can do that. You can't stamp out crazy.

The days of being able to hide out in “fortress America” and ignore the rest of the world are long over.

Actually, we could do just fine hiding out in "fortress America" and (mostly) ignoring the rest of the world if America were really a fortress. The problem is that, not only is America a giant open-market bazaar these days allowing any third-world idiot in, but we are actively importing them. In a true "fortress America" the 9/11 hijackers would never even have been allowed into the country just due to the fact that they were muslim.

Well, if we are going to be the world's welfare state, then, yeah, we have to be on our toes 24/7 for when our unruly guests get bored and want attention.
