Elizabeth Warren connected DNA and Native American heritage. Here's why that's destructive.
NBC News ^ | October 17, 2018 | by Kelly Hayes and Jacqueline Keeler

Although her intention was to push back against Trump, Warren has provided an unwitting assist to those attempting to take away tribal sovereignty.

Warren stated that she is not a member of any tribe, but her efforts to connect DNA and Native American heritage could nevertheless have unintended consequences. It is a common joke amongst Native people that the phrase “I’m 1/16th Cherokee” (or in Warren’s case, 1/64th to 1/1024th Cherokee - the DNA test can only offer up a possible range) is a “white proverb.” While the framing of Native identity that has emerged in discussions of Warren’s background is incredibly common, it is also highly destructive to Native people.

Most Americans are unacquainted with the true legal nature of Native identity; Warren's DNA test will doubtless muddy the waters considerably, dealing Native nations a real political blow. Although her primary intention was to push back against Trump’s goading and name calling, Warren has provided an unwitting assist to the conservative Goldwater Institute and other Republican initiatives that are attempting to take away tribal sovereignty.

As Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. stated Monday night, tribes determine citizenship in several different ways. As a political representative of another government, “It’s wholly unhelpful for any national leader to cling to DNA to determine or to establish that they are Native American.”

From Wiki:

American cowboys were drawn from multiple sources. By the late 1860s, following the American Civil War and the expansion of the cattle industry, former soldiers from both the Union and Confederacy came west, seeking work, as did large numbers of restless white men in general. A significant number of African-American freedmen also were drawn to cowboy life, in part because there was not quite as much discrimination in the west as in other areas of American society at the time. A significant number of Mexicans and American Indians already living in the region also worked as cowboys. Later, particularly after 1890, when American policy promoted “assimilation” of Indian people, some Indian boarding schools also taught ranching skills. Today, some Native Americans in the western United States own cattle and small ranches, and many are still employed as cowboys, especially on ranches located near Indian Reservations. The “Indian Cowboy” also became a commonplace sight on the rodeo circuit.

..The problem with Warren’s story is that none of the evidence supports it,

but she's a female and she says it's true..we have no choice but to believe her

What about sovereign nations residing in the USA, a sovereign nation, and having different laws than the USA? How about looking at that and giving it an end date. Either you’re American, or you’re not.
Europeans invaded this territory and killed most of the natives, and occupied the land and grew and multiplied. All those who did it are dead. I had nothing to do with the massacre, and I refuse to be held responsible for the actions of other people, my ancestors or not.
End it now, along with “affirmative action” and race-based preferences.

“the conservative Goldwater Institute and other Republican initiatives that are attempting to take away tribal sovereignty”

What?! Never heard of these initiatives. Is NBC just making them up as part of their Fake News?

They really need this story to die before the election. They know how it will end if it drags on.

Yes. The true natives are recognized by the Indians as the Anazazi, the Ancient Ones.

Actually, tribal nations are subject to U.S. federal law, the Constitution, etc. They just are not subject to state law but rather have their own for internal issues. IOW, they fall somewhere in between the fedgov and the states.

Have spent a lot of time on reservations. (Dated a Native American gal — a real one). Most everyone I met was a patriot. A bunch even wore “Redskins” (as in the NFL team) hats and laughed at “silly white liberals” who made an issue of the team’s name.

Never had an issue in one. Really don’t see a problem with this arrangement. System has worked for a long time.

Kind of hope this has an effect on her re-election campaign.

From Elizabeth Warren's Instagram post:

Since I got into politics, people have attacked my heritage -p elizabethwarren When I decided to run for the Senate in 2012, I never thought that my family’s Native American heritage would come under attack and my dead parents would be called liars. And I never expected the President of the United States to use my family’s story as a racist political joke against Native American history, culture, and people – over, and over, and over.

But you know me: I don’t take any fight lying down, so today we launched a new Fact Squad website for anyone who wants see the facts for themselves.

A Flawed Analysis | Doubts on the 0.4% Native Results of Elizabeth Warren, TPS #182

"What I am explaining to you is that Elizabeth Warren has the genetic pedigree to become the leader of the Alt-Right. She is whiter than Richard Spencer."

J.F. points out that the 0.4% could be anything from East Russian to genes left over from the Islamic invasion of Spain.

Aren’t Native Americans actually Asian immigrants?

Probably, but some are known to have come from Europe, or at least to have European links: http://www.spiegel.de/international/dna-analysis-shows-native-americans-had-european-roots-a-954675.html

Since archeological and REAL DNA evidence-not the 23 and me feelgood crap that you pay for-says some Native Americans came from Asia, some from Europe-it depends on where they are. Those in Canada, Alaska, etc are genetically more Asian, those further south in the US, etc are more European-since they’ve been all mixed up for 12,000 years and more I suppose Native Americans are technically Eurasian...

Interesting that Fauxoahontas Warren chose Cherokee for her “native ancestry” since the Cherokees who had DNA tested had the most European DNA and the oldest-of any Native tribe...
