Massachusetts senator (and 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful) Elizabeth Warren is not Native American.
Native American identity is about belonging to a community. It is a specific political, legal and social formation akin to a form of citizenship that is particular to each tribe, nation, confederacy or otherwise sovereign and self-determining Indigenous government—numbering 567 federally recognized tribes and hundreds of Alaska Native, Hawaiian and state-recognized entities across the country.
It is also racial. Not in the biological sense, but in a more ephemeral cultural and social understanding of that word—an identity lived by Native Americans across tribal affiliations and policed by the shifting structures of discrimination, opportunity and the many mundane and extraordinary life experiences in between.
Warren cannot, does not and should not claim Native American identity in its tribal or racial form. She, like many people on a continent taken from First Peoples, can claim Native American ancestry

She is a “native American” in the same sense as 95% of us on this board are.
I can trace my lineage back to immigrants that came over hundreds of years ago.
I was born here to parents who were born here.
I speak the language and follow the customs of the United states.
I am by definition a natural born native American.
We all have, to one degree or another, a mixture of heritage. I’m Czech on my dad’s side, put on my mom’s is Swedish, German, Jewish and God knows what else.
My great-great-grandfather was Jewish but he fell in love with a Scottish girl. He married her and was disenfranchised by his family.

But she is a total waste of space.
Also I’m not happy about how she used her claim to advance your career. I hope voters will remember that. Even the Cherokees are mad at her.

Maybe Warren has a future as spokesperson. On the other hand I don’t think any car company would want to get near her with a ten-foot pole.
Please use recognized Indian jargon when speaking of lieawatha - presumably you meant 10 foot TOTEM pole.
You know, I was born here, as were my parents as was their parents, etc, etc.
I don’t know how my DNA breaks down, but I consider myself a “Native” American. Whether or not I have any American Indian blood in me, is immaterial.
That is true; the tribes were at war with each other for a very long time.
I am sure hers has a red interior.

It would really be funny if she lost her Senate seat over this. Remember, this is Teddy’s seat and Scott Brown took it away back then.
She took a spot at Harvard away from a REAL minority.
THAT’S the real reason they are peeved at her.
