I thought the way they built the roof so as to NOT blow away was cool.

And the stairs? They WERE designed to give way.

I wonder if it’s his primary residence?

You pretty much have to be rather wealthy to afford one of these houses nowadays. The prices have risen so that most of the owners are out of town investors who rent them out for vacation rentals. Not many local residents can afford the houses in places such as this and St. George Island which is about 30 minutes away.

The article says the owner lives in Cleveland Tenn. This is likely a vacation place.

Even though the house is standing, it might as well have been nuked. All around you is a ghost town.

I didn't see it in the article, but if the owners left a sign saying

NO HEINEKEN HERE!!!

Then I would assume looters would look elsewhere.

“He should have built a helipad to go with it.”

Version 2.0?

While they are at it, they could make the house gas powered and solar.

Soon, only the mega-rich will be able to afford to build a house on the Florida barrier islands.

Maybe that's the honest way of things.

I'm poor, I'd LOVE to have a beautiful beach house...

But I'm poor, so I can't.

That's not the rich man's fault.

I think the codes could use a very hefty strength increase. The money lost when a big one comes through is more than equal to the money spent building extra strong.

and when it comes to hurricanes concrete is better than 2x4s and plywood. having said that even if this was my house i would still have evacuated.

The house, built of reinforced concrete, is elevated on tall pilings to allow a storm surge to pass underneath with little damage.

Ya, think this may have had a bit more to do with it than which more or less brittle screw they chose? Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Interesting that when building in a salt water environment even screws can be critical, not just for hurricanes but normal conditions.

Treated lumber today has a high copper content. When normal galvanized nails are used as fasteners in a salt water environment, the moist salt air causes zinc in the nails to react with the copper in the treated lumber, forming a battery. The galvanic current corrodes away the nails in a short amount of time. Epoxy coated nails are somewhat better, but best practices call for stainless steel nails in a shore environment.

So yes, even choosing a nail can be critical!

“Atty King.... (read:leftist democrat Panhandle machine atty)— says its global warming causing these storms— we never used to have these kinds of storms”

The stupidity of people blaming man caused “warming” for hurricanes is beyond stupid. It was hurricanes that took out the Spanish Main— and all their ripped off gold shipments. There was ZERO heat generating industry from man that caused those storms. What a maroon, oh, and a Goldman Sachs (Golden Slacks) investor in the “carbon commodity” exchange they started and .... closed down in ... Chicago.

RIIIIIGHT— idiot. How about this one (family survived this one)

The Labor Day 1935 Hurricane— read the tale. Photos and story all massive the impact- From Natl.Geographic. If you every visit Islamorada Key, FL— stop and see the mass gravesite and Art Deco monument to thousands buried there

True. So, if one could buy true creosoted wood beams this would not be a problem.

Along with the “waiver” from gubmint to use R-12 or lower refrigerant in their a/c, the railroads of the US have a waiver for the use, in ground of creosoted “sleeper” rail ties.

One could construct a home of purchased creosote used ties, and the appropriate screws... and build a heck of a beach bunker (preferably above ground). Good post- on the chemistry alone. Corrosion is an issue on the nails/screws... and the 3 year life of Airconditioning units with Aluminum outside coil vanes that are attached to copper tubing. Turns to aluminum oxide in a very short time in salt spray laden air at the coasts.

I saw that. Even smart people are stupid enough to believe the Climate Change lie.

I have been to Galveston. I’ve seen the history and know of the 8,000 to even more than 10,000 dead.

Was that Climate Change? No, of course not.

This appears to be the spot where the house was located, however the last Google Maps Visit was in 2011, so the lot is vacant. But y9ou can see the house behine it and the Yellow house off to the East if you move the image.

The renamed (for marketing purposes) Man made (or Anthropogenic) Global Warming-— now called Climate Change. Cause of course— who wouldn’t believe Climate changes— of course it does... but humans don’t cause THAT!! Thanks!

What causes a CAT 4 hurricane to spring up in 3 days in early October, the end of the season? It is the, pardon the expression, 3 to 8 foot surface depth of “pee-warm” over 80 degree F water and no competing steering upper air currents to cut off the formation of the cyclonic circulation that causes the up draft and huge winds. People generally don’t understand this.

Nor do they understand the direction of winds— due to coriolis forces. In the Northern Hemisphere they are counter clockwise (and 2 oclock position relative to direction of movment is NOT the place to be). In the Southern, the winds are clockwise. Typhoons in S. Pacific... clockwise and in some ways more powerful.

Great book on Galveston storm, written by the same writer who wrote “In the Garden of the Beasts” American Family in prewar nazi Germany. Erik Larson.

Title: “Isaac’s Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History.” There is a 2 hour video on youtube from History channel as well.

No clue the thing was coming. We have much better of course today- but still people don’t get it... and, like in Sandy.. milk and rip off the insurance system and our governnment. Storm Grifters. FEMA contracts out the “rescue team” to a democrat funded firm of “insurance scam” aiders and abettors to theft. Free generators for minor damage etc.

Also, note that this house is right next to the beach. Many of the houses that crumbled resulted from the debris of the poorly-built houses smashing into them. I wonder how it would have faired if it was further back off of the beach.
