Every year, nearly 45,000 people in America kill themselves. That is more than twice the number that die in homicides, and the numbers are increasing. There is one group in particular causing this spike - white, middle aged men. India Rakusen goes to Montana, where suicide rates are double the national average, to find out what drives so many of these men to despair and taking their own lives.
"Every year, nearly 45,000 people in America die by suicide. That's over double the number of homicides. In the last 20 years, suicide rates in most western countries have fallen, but in the U.S. they've gone up by nearly a third. And there's one particular group of Americans causing the spike in the numbers: white middle aged men."

This has been talked about for years.
In fact if read certain minority articles there are people who celebrate this trend.
Wondering if this is a percentage increase...or just number increase? (Not going to YOUTUBE to read)
Anyway...my Grandfather hung himself in the early 1940's in Northeastern MONTANA...he was a shepherd....and an alcoholic...his only son, my father, was, well, highly affected. But, also, my father's grandfather was murdered almost exactly a year later. Montana's a tough place to live.
whiners? WHINERS? How many whiners are taking their lives? Good study question.
However.
It is the men who don’t talk about “feelings”, don’t get help, self-medicate, hide it, and it takes its toll physically. Stress drains the brain and depression ensues. There are millions of men suffering. Alone, inside.
I was just thinking about emotions. Emotions are a RESPONSE. They are not what should be used for judgment. Too much emphasis on a reaction does not focus on the CAUSE. Over a decade ago my brother said the white male needs a lobbyist in DC. He would have been great at it. What a talker!
hopelessness is like quicksand. How do we instill hope? How do we share hope? How do we find the guys who need someone to cover their six?
Oh, carbs and processed food has a LOT to do with it, too. Stop eating crap. My other brother, good life, woke up every morning wanting to die. Atkins diet, 3 days changed. So, there are external problems, physical problems, psychological, and emotional (wrong reaction?).
Gee, where have I heard that before? Oh, that’s right,
New American Standard Bible Luke 10:27
And he answered, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” [caps are a quote from the Old Testament...not yelling. LOL]
Loving God and your neighbor, who needs a neighbor like you, gives all of us a life long job, paid or not. The verse also shows that our Creator knows the major parts to care for and stay healthy and happy. Heart, soul, strength, mind, not necessarily in that order.
I would think it would be strength (body = eat right BACON! and exercise! ),
mind (Think on these things-God’s cognitive therapy = Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things) what Good is there in your life and dwell on that!
soul (first thing after coffee—praise and communicating -hard as that is for men- oh, that reminds me to read a book I have that was written looong ago-why men don’t go to church) or meditate on who God is, what He has done in your life and what blessings He has in store for you (promises are almost always conditional...motivation, I guess)
and last, heart, or emotions. Did you know that your heart has brain cells? Take care of your whole self. Exercise is very important.
How about a white male lobbyist in DC that will fight for logging and save the owl.
I also wonder how many of the white men all over the nation that are taking their lives are veterans?
I see the hardest part of it all is finding them and getting them to START whining, eh?
The reason your post triggered this rant is I, too, hate whining. I am not whining here, I am bitching. :) I tried suicide once. Never whined. No one knew. No one knew for decades.
We were in western Montana a week ago and stopped at a remote inn called the Amber Bear for lunch. The owner was telling us how tough it is there. Lots of poverty, not many jobs, toxic waste sites all over. All masked by incredible natural beauty.
Apparently the rate has zoomed upward the past three years. About the time women started talking about “toxic masculinity.” But somehow I don’t think that caught on in Montana.
Antigua and Barbuda on the other hand, rank last with 0 suicides per 100K.
Suicides are obviously related to weather.........
I once talked with an investigator for a life insurance company and he said those black widows, male and female, are very common out there......
Not that they kill the spouse but marry the ill ones then wait till they die......
--Winston Churchill.
I was at my shooting range about a month ago and I guy matching the description in the article walked in, rented a .45, and let it rip right next to me. Shot himself in the side of the head. “This was a bad idea” is what his eyes were saying to me as I watched them turn off.
Is that a true story?
My God...really? How horrific for him and you!
My God...really? How horrific for him and you!
It’s a tiny part of a very true story. Yes
Good point.
Dafuq. Why don’t you call and fill me in?
