In the Michigan Senate race, Republican nominee John James remains a long shot against Democratic incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow. But he's an especially attractive candidate, and the most recent poll shows him just 9 points behind his overwhelmingly favored opponent.
What's going on here? Some might point to the fierce battle over Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's nomination. But I think the candidate himself is the key here. As a small business owner who illustrates both the history and progress of the American dream, James is also a West Point and Harvard graduate and a combat veteran.
Although he branched into Army aviation as a helicopter pilot, James earned the Ranger infantry tab. Put simply, James is one impressive guy. And while defeating the Democratic incumbent in nominally blue Michigan will be an uphill struggle, James is not nearly as far behind as you'd expect, given the attention his race has gotten.

I fear James has no chance in this race. Trump needs to grab him for something - this guy’s a rock star and I see great things ahead for him.

I saw him today on FOX - had no idea who he was at first but he was pretty impressive...Has more to sell himself as a Senator than anything Stabenow has...Hope the voters there see what we see..

I am in Michigan and Stabenow is ripe to be beaten. She is not liked especially in the Black community. She was Hillary’s sock puppet if the GOP would get behind James he could win, uphill battle yes but I am telling you he can win.
As a Michigan resident I at least twice heard a stupid woman in a front of a supermarket style of “man on the street” opinion interview on the radio turn out to actually be U S Senator Stabenow! I had thought, get that blabbermouth longwinded, stupid hag off the news show, she is so ignorant. It was Debbie!
The reason Michigan voters re-elect her and may do it again (God forbid) is that they have heard of her name! That’s it. The incumbents win because people have heard their name. I think in her first term she had not one piece of passed legislation with her name on it.
Stabenow has a huge campaign organization and lots of out-of-state funding. I don't think race or ideology has a big part to play.
I know a bunch of white, conservative farmers who support John James.

As I’ve posted on a couple other threads, I’ve seen many signs for him, and ONE for her. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win.
Good chances he wins when minority voters see him and hear him.
I’ll be voting for him. I think he has a great chance. PDJT flipped Michigan and it just seems that there’s so little enthusiasm for democrats right now. They’re just the party of mean.
Just 9 points? That’s a pretty big lead. Hopefully it will tighten.
