The “Lullaby of Broadway” production number in “Gold Diggers of 1935” ended on a sad and disturbing note. The protagonist poured some milk into a bowl for a cat before she went out to the show. The final scene shows the poor kitty waiting by the bowl for the girl to return—but she will not be returning because she was killed in a fall.

A lot of people recorded that song over the years, didn’t they?

That’s why it qualifies for entry into the Great American Songbook. Every generation finds something in it.

Howdy, Liberty!
Been a while since we’ve been here at the same time.
I hope all’s going well and that you’re enjoying some of this nice autumn weather.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935: LULLABY OF BROADWAY
It starts with a Harold Arlen tune from The Wizard of Oz before turning to a Forties take on the song. Groucho Marx attended one of her early shows in Los Angeles and said, I wish she had been around when I was starting out.
Bette Midler: Lullaby of Broadway

A bit warmer there than it was here today. We only had mid 60s but it was a beautiful sunny day. Clouds moved in just before sunset though.
It was a good event and a packed house. She gave a good speech but took no question, durn it. She was pressed for time as she had an event at another town to go to. Our congressman was there, too, and we had a nice chat.

I’m glad you got to go and maybe a chance to see if she’s what TN needs. You sure don’t need any dim-wits right now. LOL! Good you got to corner the congressman!
I think it’ll get cooler here over the weekend...probably Sunday. Anything that’s under 85 is ok by me.

Dang! You knocked it out quickly today! And had a nice warm afternoon to enjoy. Sounds like it was a pretty one too. Nice to hear the lil wild man isn’t quite as wild these days.
Things are ok here. Nice and cool at long last and it’s a welcome change. The kittehs are starting to calm down finally. The new moon this week had them wound up like two-dollar watches, as usual. LOL

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935: LULLABY OF BROADWAY
This 1979 entry from the early punk era was released in the last years of Harrys life, and we have no record of his reaction. Its a bit outside most peoples comfort zone.
Bram Tchaikovsky: Lullaby of Broadway
