It’s always sad when one privileged Ivy Leaguer with five Vietnam deferments attacks another privileged Ivy Leaguer with five Vietnam deferments.

President Trump went after Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., this week with an absurd retelling of how the senator once fabricated stories about serving in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine.

To be clear, Trump isn’t wrong in calling Blumenthal a liar. The senator most absolutely embellished his record years ago, making it sound as if he served in Vietnam. Blumenthal never served overseas the entire time he was a reservist in the Marine Corps.

But the way Trump tells the story of how Blumenthal was outed for misleading voters is just total nonsense.

Trump has never claimed he was in Vietnam.

He also took deferments. So what? Millions did in those years. I went through them. I joined in 1970 for active duty and for whatever reason didn’t go to Vietnam.

I am called a Vietnam ERA veteran. Those like me would never take advantage of that misleading label to pretend we had been in Vietnam. It would be hugely dishonorable. I’ll never know why I ended up in Germany, but I did.

My father-in-law has a similar but more dramatic story. He was on a troop ship for Korea. It stopped in Alaska, and they came aboard asking who could type. He was one of the names that could. He was told to gather his bags and he ended up being a clerk in Alaska for the duration of his tour. Just one of those things. But he’d never lie about being in Korea.

To claim “He never claimed a medal...” is bullshit. Every soldier who set foot in Viet Nam received at least one medal for doing so. So to claim to have been there is, indeed, claiming a medal. Even REMFs who just tended bar at the O Club.

Saying "misspoken" when the truth is that you outright LIED isn't taking full responsibility, Dick. Not even close.

As far as the idiotic author's contention that the President calling out Blumenthal on his lies is more absurd that Dick's lies themselves...well, that's par for the course for the pathetic Washington Examiner.
