Aldrin wrote his dissertation at MIT on Line-of-sight guidance techniques for manned orbital rendezvous.
It was the technical precursor to the Gemini missions that demonstrated rendezvous and EVA.
Before that, the ordinary pilot guys like the Kelly’s screwed up manual rendezvous and EVA because they didn’t understand either the orbital mechanics OR the dynamics of EVA.
Aldrin’s a damn legend. The Kelly’s are merely loudmouths.

For the record, Astronaut Aldrin was not only ‘present’ when man first stepped on the moon, he was the second man to walk on the moon. No need to water down his momentous achievement.
Russia almost blew up 2 astronauts trying to get them into orbit because we can’t.
