It was the technical precursor to the Gemini missions that demonstrated rendezvous and EVA.
Before that, the ordinary pilot guys like the Kelly’s screwed up manual rendezvous and EVA because they didn’t understand either the orbital mechanics OR the dynamics of EVA.

For the record, Astronaut Aldrin was not only ‘present’ when man first stepped on the moon, he was the second man to walk on the moon. No need to water down his momentous achievement.

Reminds me of the hell raising that went on when the US Army fought tooth and nail to keep the Air Corps under the control of the Army. Nevertheless, the Army Air Corps became the independent US Air Force. It is now time to divide responsibilities again. Buzz is absolutely correct. A Space Corps is badly needed and should not be under the control of the Air Force. Kelly is not as important as he pretends to be.
I have a problem with the lack of clarity regarding Buzz when it is said “Aldrin, 88, was ‘present’ when Americans first stepped foot on the moon.” Buzz Aldrin was THE SECOND MAN TO WALK ON THE MOON.He followed Neil Armstrong down the ladder of America’s greatest space achievement. He was part of the enormous risk and great success of the Space Program.
Kelly wasn’t there for the history making flights. Aldrin was.
