Former Republican governor Pat McCrory’s support for this project is one of the main reasons the highly partisan Roy Cooper was able to narrowly defeat him in his reelection bid in 2016. The other reason is that the Democrats who were running the election in Durham County kept the polls open late until enough for Cooper to receive enough votes to narrowly defeat McCrory, the former Mayor of Charlotte.
