The San Francisco school boards new president broke with protocol Tuesday night by deciding to skip the Pledge of Allegiance before a meeting, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
In its place, Steven Cook recited a quote from the poet Maya Angelou: When you learn, teach. When you get, give.
Cook told The Chronicle he chose not to enforce the pledge because of his disappointment with the political climate. He said the Trump administration has been attacking our liberties.
The Pledge of Allegiance, while required by state education code, is rarely enforced by schools, district officials said. District spokesman Gentle Blythe said it is not required for school boards.
If you ask 10 Americans who wrote it, or when it was implemented, or why it is how we start our meetings, a lot of us would be hard pressed (to answer), Cook said.
There are a lot of ways to express gratitude and appreciation for the country and its citizens. This is how I plan to do that.
Stevon Cook The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, a Christian socialist minister. In the mid-1950s, President Dwight D. Eisenhower asked Congress to include the words under God, amid the rise of communism.
Cook reportedly told no one of his idea to skip the Pledge of Allegiance. Some board members were receptive to Cooks new idea.

When things go downhill in California, who do they run to for help????
Of course, not surprising in liberal SF .
Of course they want to listen to a poem by liberal icon Maya d’Angelou for inspiration.
“When things go downhill in California, who do they run to for help????”
California is on its own.
And being that California has more wealth than any other state, they won’t need our help.
Meanwhile IFC is playing “Aliens”, and Cpl Hicks statement about nuking the site from orbit just to “be sure” happened to occur as I was clicking on this thread. Talk about irony.
Somebody should drop the San Francisco school boards president on his head.

California is on its own.
I was dismayed to hear of several local Texas fire departments sending help for their wildfires. I can see solidarity with fellow firefighters, who tend to be very conservative, but I say let ‘em burn.
The reason is, of course, they hate the USA.
How many times in the past several years has D!psh!t Brown ask for government aid????
They claim “sanctuary state” and refuse to obey immigration laws, but then they ask for money from the government...
They claim to be rich and able to run their state without US “interference” UNTIL something happens...Then they say “Hey, we are part of the country too...Give us your money...”
I say cut it off and shove it out to sea....
“I was dismayed to hear of several local Texas fire departments sending help for their wildfires. I can see solidarity with fellow firefighters, who tend to be very conservative, but I say let em burn.”
Texas owed them.
In 2011, during the height of the drought and there were wildfires throughout much of Texas, California firefighters came to help.
California did not let Texas burn and Texas does not let California burn.
California isn’t a state it’s a place.
All states ask for federal aid.
Florida will be asking for a lot in the wake of Hurricane Michael.
Texas asked for aid after Hurricane Harvey.
Louisiana and Mississippi asked for aid for Hurricane Katrina.
California is less of a burden than most other states.
Firefighters from California would not be allowed to fight fires in Texas.
MORON!
This attitude is WHAT CREATED the political climate!
It’s not so much as how much they get...It’s the state’s ATTITUDE toward the rest of the country....
Well, as California wants federal aid, it should come with strings attached—respect 1st & 2nd amendment, respect immigration laws, end sanctuary cities and state, stand for the pledge and anthem, teach AMERICAN civics in school, and say the Pledge of Allegiance. Otherwise, no funds, no new government business in California. In the last, never understood why President Trump hasn’t said to avoid doing new government business in California much like Obama squashed business in Las Vegas.
“Firefighters from California would not be allowed to fight fires in Texas.”
California firefighters have helped during Texas wildfires.
The whole attitude is “We’re better than you....”
Until they need something....
