Trump says he will overrule Jeff Sessions on prison reform
Washington Examiner ^ | Oct. 11, 2018

President Trump said Thursday that he supports prison reform and that Attorney General Jeff Sessions' opposition doesn't represent his administration's position.

"If he doesn't [support reform], then he gets overruled by me. Because I make the decision, he doesn't," Trump said during a phone interview broadcast on "Fox and Friends."

Sessions, an opponent of criminal justice reform, argues the pending First Step Act would make the country less safe, threatening one of the top priorities of presidential adviser and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.

We have become a nation of imprisoned. We put people in prison unnecessarily and for too long. We just keep building more prisons. A lot of people in prison could be out on parole doing community service and paying a fine.

I’m notr in favor of easier time for those convicted according to laws and imprisoned.

Just like the border wall issue and illegals, trying to help prisoners while doing little to stop the flow into jails is stupid and waste of money and time in fruitless ways like reducing time, etc. Jailing is just a business that govt seems determined to keep growing.

I’d rather we spend more time and effort helping families become educated about teaching and training their children not to break laws.

Sessions shuffles to the (slow) beat of his own geriatric drum.

Short term gain. Trump is using this to lure enough black votes away from the Democrats to give them a very tough uphill slog.

Long term risk. If these people who get sprung go out and start re-offending Trump is going to come off looking very, very bad.

President Trump looks WEAK!!!!!! Trump is Session’s boss. I realize replacing Sessions will be very difficult. Our President has a very small Rolodex to choose from. I also realize that there is not enough time to go through the nomination process. He should have been fired long ago. I just don’t get it!!! Or, sadly, I do.

He specifically said not hard and fast drug dealers. He is referring to insane amount of time people spend in prison for non violent crimes. The punishment should fit the crime. The disparity is mind boggling.

“elderly” compassion?......why?...if the jail time is good enough for an 18yo its good enough for the “elderly” at age 65 let alone 60.

Remember though, this is only for Federal crimes, which is actually a small percentage of incarcerations as the states have.

I like this a whole lot better than what MoonBeam did recently in CA though, allowing all those who have been charged with murder to be released if they weren't the ones who actually pulled the trigger but were helping with the crime. THAT is going to release a lot of very hardened criminals all at one.

This is the question posed by his SIL on the topic -

"“The single biggest thing we want to do is really define what the purpose of a prison is. Is the purpose to punish, is the purpose to warehouse, or is the purpose to rehabilitate?”"

I say all three, and I think we can all agree on that, then the question comes as to which takes priority and how much resources are we going to throw at it.

“and authorize $250 million over five years for work-training programs for prisoners.”

As a retired correctional officer I can tell you that I’ve seen the miracle that comes from many inmates who have gone through a vocational training program. They realize that they know that now they have a good chance to get off the mean streets...hustling drugs, mugging, b&e. It’s like seeing a dry drooping bud coming to life and blooming after a rainstorm.

I think these is so much opposition to him from the GOPe, which makes up most of our Republican Senators and a sizable minority of representatives, that they can exert a lot of influence over his decisions.

Come to think of it I’ve never seen anything like it. Sessions and Rosenstein should have been gone long ago. Poor leadership at this point. I have yet to meet someone who thinks this situation isn’t ridiculous outside the internet clowns and the 4D chess,Q garbage.

You’ve never seen anything like it because you’ve never seen a POTUS try to govern while being actively undermined by his own party.

Tort reform is needed as well, I'd guess that Sessions would oppose that too.

Doesn’t sound bad. Basically rewards good behavior and provides job training to hopefully keep them from going back.
