I’d say his analysis of how states might go is wrong and that some states - like California might break apart, but the central idea is one we should discuss. We have two big tribes who do not get along. Rather than a hot or cold civil war, would we not be better off agreeing to peacefully split?

OF COURSE there would be a lot of thorny issues to resolve. I have no illusions about that. Still, it could be done as numerous examples around the world including the 13 colonies secession from the British Empire simply demonstrate. By the way, states do have that right and this was always envisioned by the Founders. Nobody at the time of ratification of the constitution said states did not have a right of unilateral secession.
