My guess is Karl Rove let Trump borrow his “weather machine” to guide this storm to the panhandle.

I read an account where a Galveston official was advised the storm was probable but based on his personal experience chose to disregard the information

True, but the locals managed to come back and rebuild. San Francisco in 1906 rebuilt without any significant government aid other than expedient care right after the event . Imagine such an event today. Three thousand fatalities, most of the center of SF burned out, towns as far away as Palo Alto heavily damaged. Oh G-d, the world is coming to an end, sob, sob. Back then it was, see what Americans can do when the worst is thrown at them. We will build it back better and bigger than ever. In less than ten years that is what had been done. It is not that bad or even terrible things happen it is the media story line of hopeless wailing and despair which is aimed at, among other things, demoralization of the country and convincing average Americans they can't do anything without gubmint telling them how.

There’s a great book called “Isaac’s Storm” about the hurricane. There were a lot of mistakes made. The Cuban weather service had more experience dealing with hurricanes and they insisted that the hurricane moved into the Gulf, but the US government weather service insisted that hurricanes simply did not go into the gulf and declined to issue warnings.

That may be true for places such as NJ, but in Texas they got down to recovering from Harvey largely on their own.

Don’t blame the hurricane. Hurricanes are a fact of nature. No one should be surprised by their arrival. Same story every year.

Problem is people are not prepared for them. Big disaster, then life as usual until the next one which surprises everyone.

Then the government pays people who had a loss, so they do nothing until the next big one.

Yes and as with Joplin, Mo coverage outside local areas just evaporated after a few days other than, as I recall, an occasional wailing network piece about people being flooded out.

Watching weather channel in apolachacola where I vacationed two weeks ago. Water street where he is standing was the old river bank and now has returned to its roots. I feel sorry for those there as they are just normal people trying to eek out a life. Florida’s oyster capital and good sport fishing. Definitely not a jet set area and probably why I love it.

Screaming. Yep. Lots of fearmongering, even on FR in overnight thread. Yes, this is a big storm and people need to take personal precautions. That said, the media hype breeds more Democrats and their media and government knows best attitude.

My beef, as I wrote last night (and got criticized for), is that the media overhype the weather, aided by the nanny state is telling people what to do. And what do we then see? Media out in the same storms faking it. We see the local government and police running roughshod over the citizenry. Treat people like idiots, they will act like idiots and become dependent upon the government to tell them what to do, when, and how. Worst recent example is Puerto Rico where people then sat around, even now by some accounts, waiting for government. This will be mainland America if we keep this up.

People need to be responsible for themselves. If they live in a substandard shack, if they live on the water, if they don’t have basic supplies, sure, leave, go to a shelter. But don’t pull the holier than thou BS with the rest of the citizens who can think and act for themselves.

Finally, while I am at it. The media and government overhype, as others note, that every storm is the biggest, the worst, the most feared. This naturally leads to them saying and people believing it is all because of global warming. Ugh, we caused this storm!

Nor Katrina. Both were Cat 5, and the Florida Panhandle was impacted by at least Cat 4 winds for both of those.

Yes that is a really nice area with an intact local culture. That is why it will be pretty much ignored by the media whores unless a ‘women and minorities mostly impacted’ story can be generated.

True - but a Cat 4 hitting that area is gonna cause some serious mayhem - after going through Katrina, my heart goes out to those being affected.

Category 12

With sustained wind speeds of 5,000 miles per hour.

It's gonna actually rip part of Florida loose from the rest of the United States.

We evacuated for Rita, in the shadow of Katrina. That was a nightmarish situation. One, I might add, I will never repeat. We stayed for Ike and Harvey.

Like acts of nature in any other area, prepare in advance with the necessary supplies and know the way out. Don't go looking for a McDonald's to be open so you can feed your kids the next morning. Really, it's common sense. If you live across a 4 lane road from the beach, probably you should leave. But the media is all about hysteria.

When it comes to weather events the media has a worse hyberpole affliction than the judges on the TV singing contests.
