In the case of Hernández v. the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, longtime umpire Ángel Hernández alleges Major League Baseball discriminated against him because he is of Latino descent by declining to name him a crew chief and preventing him from working World Series games. Given the plum assignment of first base in Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Monday night, Hernandez proved one thing beyond a reasonable doubt: MLB is guilty of discriminating against getting calls right when it allows Ángel Hernández to umpire a playoff game.
If MLB on Tuesday morning filed an exhibit with the Southern District of New York that consisted of three video clips showing Hernándezs blown calls in Game 3, it might have a dismissal by the afternoon. To miss one call in the playoffs particularly a high-profile game like the New York Yankees largest playoff defeat ever, a 16-1 loss to their rival Boston Red Sox is bad. To botch a second is unacceptable. To bungle three the third an especially egregious screw-up is incompetence personified. And if anything has held back Ángel Hernández from the promotions and responsibilities he clearly believes he deserves, the culprit is far likelier the fact that hes not particularly good at his job.

I have seen him call some horrible calls over the years.
Behind the plate?
This should be fun.
Any play that was even close to close got reviewed last night, and most often got overturned.
Not that it mattered. My Yankees got blown out. Ugly game.
He has always been a horrible umpire. I cringe that he’s calling balls and strikes tonight. He sucks.
Hoping for tonight to end better. That was awful, yes.
It’s really great the way he calls people out and safe. Great gestures. Very emphatic and dramatic.
Unfortunately, the calls have nothing to do with what actually happened on the field.
Angel Hernandez vs Laz Diaz for the heavy weight championship of prima donna umpiring would be an awesome battle.
Freegards
Baseball has had Hispanic umpires for a long time.
His suit is bunk.
Go Astros!
You have a hopelessly retro perspective. It’s the socially constructed narrative that counts, not some non-existent “objective reality.”
Really bad at what he does combined with a huge chip on his shoulder...what a combo.
I still hate instant replay. Could you imagine this joker botching a game like this between the Yankees and Orioles when Billy Martin and Earl Weaver were managing? I miss baseball of yesteryear.
Might want to check his gambling history.
Ill get back to you on that thought.
this isn’t a newsflash for anyone that knows their baseball. the triumvirate of umpire suckage is cb bucknor, joe west, and angel hernandez.
Perhaps Don only had that one call between St. Louis and Kansas City that I remember, But it was a doozy.
