Scott Kelly, a retired American astronaut with multiple space flights under his belt, apologized Sunday after quoting Winston Churchill and calling the 20th century British prime minister "one of the greatest leaders of modern times."
"Did not mean to offend by quoting Churchill. My apologies. I will go and educate myself further on his atrocities, racist views which I do not support. My point was we need to come together as one nation. We are all Americans. That should transcend partisan politics," Kelly wrote on Twitter in the evening.

What little I have had the time to read tonight reads like left-wing agitprop.
Heavy on the hyperbole and opinion and short on facts.
Need to find something from the brit perspective in order to determine the legitimacy of the charge.

WTF! Chaitin, have you ever read a good history book about WW2? He was a great leader at a time when things were bleakest for the British, French, Belgians and Poles.
He was the spirit behind “The Battle of Britain”, “Dunkirk rescues”, and the British victories in No. Africa against Rommel’s Desert Korps, esp. at El Alamein.
There is NO DEBATE about this except by the Marxist/black extremists who blamed him for everything the British Empire did in Africa and India for the past 150 years or so.
Churchill was not just a great leader, he was a great “spirit” in the fight for freedom and remember it was his “Iron Curtain” speech in the US that finally told the truth about Soviet/Stalin Communism and its plans to conquer the world. That is what the Left is pissed about. He knew who the enemy was and that they had to be fought.
Kelly should apologize for the insane carbon footprint he perpetrated on mankind.

Exactly right. I was quite young when he passed away but i’ll never forget the headline in the local paper which read in the biggest typeface Man Of The Century Dies. The entire free world knew his impact at that point in time. An honorary US citizen to boot. An honor he said he cherished.

I am not a Brit file but to diminish what this guy did for the west is myopic. Faced with a choice between Stalin or Churchill or mao and Churchill i’d Opt for Churchill 24/7. As far as the brits go my general comment is almost every current world problem can be traced to their former empire.
