WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate has adopted a resolution recognizing that Soviet dictator Josef Stalin committed genocide against the Ukrainian people in the early 1930s, when millions died in a horrific famine known as the Holodomor.
The office of Republican Senator Rob Portman, who sponsored the bill, did not immediately get back to RFE/RL for comment. Asked for comment, the State Department referred to a 2017 statement that described the Holodomor as "one of the most atrocious acts of the 20th century.
The "simple resolution" passed on October 3 commemorates the 85th anniversary of the famine of 1932-33.
The Senate "recognizes the findings of the Commission on the Ukraine Famine as submitted to Congress on April 22, 1988, including that...'Stalin and those around him committed genocide against the Ukrainians in 19321933,'" it said.
Millions of people died in the famine, which many Ukrainians consider to have been caused by Soviet central planners as an act of genocide, aimed at wiping out Ukrainian farmers.
The Ukrainian Embassy in Washington described the resolution as the "first-ever legal act" of Congress recognizing the tragedy as a genocide, a highly charged term that is likely to anger Moscow.
Russian historians, and others, have stopped short of saying the famine was engineered to kill Ukrainians, noting that many other ethnic groups also suffered.

The White House, under pressure from Turkey, has stopped short of using the word "genocide" to describe the Ottoman-era massacre."
I am amazed that Democrats would turn on their hero and role model like this. Are they trying a feeble attempt to redeem themselves after using Stalinist tactics against Kavanaugh?
Though much more light needs shedding on the Soviet Unions criminal regime, revealing Stalins manmade famine it is a good start. Shedding light on the Soviet Union needs doing because its political and scientistic religion and utopian aspirations are the religiously held system of Americas Progressive Left.
S.Res.435 - A resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that the 85th anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine of 1932-1933, known as the Holodomor, should serve as a reminder of repressive Soviet policies against the people of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the communists in Hollywood were pledging allegiance, and donating money to Stalin and his cause. They partied in their mansions and sipped champagne while millions died. If Stalinists did take control of the U.S., it would have been nice to see the expressions on the faces of the Hollywood phonies as they faced a firing squad made up of their comrades.
I’m in the middle of reading “Harvest of Sorrow” by Robert Conquest. This book is thought to be one of the best, most definitive historical accounts of the Holodomor.
It’s a tough, serious read. But important.
Despicable, heinous people.
——Not one Democrat voted against it.-——
That’s not surprising at all...soviet style socialism was an object failure...
Democratic socialism is the new and improved version which will work....with people like Sanders and Cortez running it....
How could it fail with brilliant people like those two as party leaders....?
Of course, Comrade Commissar Khrushchev had no responsibility - pure as the wind driven snow, so to speak.
The reason Crimea became a part of the Ukraine, was that Khrushchev needed the support of the Ukrainians in his power bid after Stalin's death. So he threw them a bone by offering the Ukrainian SSR the Crimea.
Comrades! No one starved in the Ukraine, they were only hungry. I know this is so, it was in the NYT, Amerika’s Pravda.
You are spot on concerning the worship of the USSR by the American Left. The useful idiots in the USA used to say that the genocide was Land Reform. Seriously, there were commies in the USA who worshiped the genocide.
So he threw them a bone by offering the Ukrainian SSR the Crimea.
Thats what Obama did when he weaponized a security against the incumbent Trump
Now just waiting for the NY Times to admit it also.
Golly. It only took them about 90 years to come to that conclusion.
The New York Times is not amused. Comrades, there will be consequences. Walther Duranty is not to be mocked.

Of course, the mass murder wasn’t just confined to the Ukraine, but to the Khazaks and the Cossacks at the Kuban River, also. They too died in great numbers.
