FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) - One suspect is in custody and a Florence police officer is deceased after eight people, seven of which were law enforcement officers, were shot in Florence Wednesday evening.
Sources tell News13 Fred Hopkins is the suspect arrested in the case.
According to Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby with the Florence County Sheriff's Office, the suspect surrendered to deputies after talking with a negotiator and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Kirby also says a 20-year-old male inside the home was also shot and is still alive.

FWIW, I’d hold off on making assumptions due to lack of a pic. Looks like cops were there to serve a warrant regarding sexual assault of a minor. Did LE not do any surveillance of the property before they went to serve?

According to a local news source, the shooter is a white Viet Nam veteran who was or still is married to a prominent local divorce lawyer. The shooter shot some of the cops from “several hundred yards away” according to a cop on the scene. The suspect has been suffering from Agent Orange exposure including cancers that were in remission. His FB page indicates he gets lots of range time with a ‘Nam specced out M-14. 101st Airborne.
The black guy pictured is the cop who was shot and died.

I don’t know anything about the Florence Police Department, but I am always disturbed when I see help wanted ads posted by municipalities (mainly in the South) offering police officer jobs at shockingly low salaries.
Makes me question the quality of their recruits and their subsequent investment in training.
And 7+ officers to serve a warrant? Something very wrong with this story.
That might be the deceased officer.

Looks like they were serving a warrant - easy to miss, I caught it on the 3rd time reading through the article. Only time serving a warrant was mentioned.
The others showed up to aid the first one shot.

That is not in the main article and I’ve read more than half a dozen since this was first posted yesterday. Seems like late excuse by police. And I say excuse because there seems to be lots of odd things about this whole thing. Reading more...
That clears up a lot. The officer was executed.
On another note, anyone who is local, please make it a point to honor the officer and department at his funeral procession.
Two years ago, my county lost a couple deputies who were ambushed. We stood on a freeway overpass along the procession route to honor one of them. (The other didn’t have a public ceremony)
A cop friend who was in the processional said he cried the whole way as he saw the massive support. It was a 40 mile processional with people lining the entire route.
An officer was also recently killed and we did the same. Another buddy who is a State Trooper joined us on the overpass and said several times how meaningful our support is.
It really brings a community together.
You are engaging in exactly the same sort of stupid behavior we saw from Senate Democrats over Judge K.
