FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) - One suspect is in custody and a Florence police officer is deceased after eight people, seven of which were law enforcement officers, were shot in Florence Wednesday evening.
Sources tell News13 Fred Hopkins is the suspect arrested in the case.
According to Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby with the Florence County Sheriff's Office, the suspect surrendered to deputies after talking with a negotiator and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Kirby also says a 20-year-old male inside the home was also shot and is still alive.

Kirby identified the suspect as 74-year-old Fred Hopkins who lived at the home on Ashton Drive where the incident occurred. Hopkins suffered a head injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Law enforcement officials are unable to speak with the suspect at this time due to multiple health issues, Kirby says.
If it was a white male, the name and pic would be all over the news.
No pic, which naturally makes one suspect........
News by omission?
BEFORE I get worked up over this, how about someone explaining WHY police were involved or at the house in the first place. Was there something going on, was this a SWATTING gone bad (all are bad), did the police go to the wrong address. I’ve read about half-a-dozen news reports and absolutely none say why police went there in the first place. I’m growing suspicious.
A 74 year old was able to shoot five police officers?
I don’t know any details but that seems odd.
Screw his health issues, get in there and interrogate him.
Elderly devotee of Colin Kaepernick?
Specifically, was this self-defense by the 74-year old homeowner? Police silence suggest it was and they are scrambling for excuses.
The pic is the 52 year old officer who was killed....RIP.
I do NOT understand how 5 cops make themselves targets?
While allowing for the possibility of an ambush, did the police involved consider taking cover after the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or even 6th officer was struck?
Oh, just now read that the suspect was a 74-year-old. And the guy in the pic that I posted is no way that old. So why was he there? Was he one of the victims?
Good point. Prince Georges County Police in Maryland recently did a no-knock entry on a house. The homeowner fired a shotgun and hit two officers before they identified. He dropped the gun immediately.
He was not charged and immediately and publicly apologized to. The police went to the wrong house. Officers not badly injured.
This picture is of the 30 yr veteran of the police force who just lost his life.....The police chief was near tears
Heard this morning on the news that they were serving a warrant for suspected sexual abuse of children and that there were several children in the home when the shootings occurred.
ww
Thanks. Saw that afterwards and corrected myself.
