It’s called Freedom of the Seas. Don’t much like it in this case...

We are not at war you can't just fire on PLAN ships(even though I'd like that).

On the contrary, if the PLAN thinks the USN ship was violating their territorial limit(which is BS in this case and everyone knows it) then they could fire on the US warship. They didn't do that because this is all BS.

No kinetic act of war right before the midterms?

They can’t, only if they were allowed to on purpose.

Not sure what yo are suggesting. A PLAN ship gets close to a USN vessel by maneuvering into its course. A ship sailing in international waters has certain rights, a warship even more.

5 NM is close quarters battle for warship. Any warship with anti-ship missiles at 50, 100 or even 500 miles is a threat, system dependent; so what is your point?

What we do not want is any nation to dictate where and when our naval vessels may sail, within international laws and rules of the sea. I am sure that our diplomats will be protesting and complaining, its what is done. Until someone actually conducts an act of war, the Decatur, in this case, did what it was supposed to do. Sail past disputed land, force the Chinese to react, then insure the safety of the ship and crew by seamanship or warfare if required....

Pretty sure the Decatur was not alone- the PLAN vessel was probably passively locked by other surface/subsurface and or airborne systems. We don’t fight “oneseys”.
