S Koreans Will Oppose Seoul Paying for Reunification With Pyongyang - Lawmaker

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - South Korea will have to foot the bill for the reunification with North Korea and when citizens learn about the cost they will not support reunification, Korean Patriots Party leader Cho Won-jin told Sputnik.

"US President [Donald] Trump is saying that he wants reunification without using America’s money whereas [South Korean President] Moon Jae-in wants to use Korea’s money for reunification, but the Korean public doesn’t really know this, and when they find out about it, there won’t be many Koreans who will agree to it," Cho said on Tuesday.

Cho pointed out that "people are not really thinking about the cost of this," but will start thinking if reunification occurs.

"Afterward, the next step is ratification by the National Assembly, but that has not happened yet as well. When the details come out, such as the money issue, under what terms people are thinking about reunifying and all that, most Koreans will be against it," Cho said.

Cho emphasized, however, ambivalence regarding cost does not mean that the people in South Korea do not want reunification to take place.

"Nobody would disagree that we all want to reunify, but the actual question here is reunification under what terms? Is it under the liberal democracy as the Republic of Korea wants it or is it reunification under socialism as advocated by North Korea?" he said.

Cho said he thinks reunification will take place, but South Koreans do not want reunification under communism or socialism.

"We want reunification under liberal democracy, and this is what the world agrees as well," Cho said.

Cho noted that if North Korea were to give up its nuclear weapons program, they will need to start thinking about food and basic necessities for the citizens.

"With the sanctions strengthening, we think that North Korea will give up their weapons, but the Moon Jae-in government is actually hindering this progress," Cho said.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula has significantly improved since the beginning of the year with Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un holding three bilateral meetings that resulted in a joint pledge to reach a peace treaty.

In June, Kim reached an agreement with US President Donald Trump stipulating that North Korea would make efforts to promote complete denuclearization in exchange for the suspension of US-South Korean military drills, as well as potential sanctions relief.

We'll pay for it if North Korea will sign away 60% of their mineral wealth. North Koreans will start eating better than most people 2 weeks after that agreement.

This isn’t like the reunification of the two Germany’s, when communism in eastern Europe collapsed.

North Korea is still full commie, this will turn out much like the Vietnams. Give it time, and all will go to hell quickly if they allow the North to freely go south.

Thank God, no. We have a businessman who is leading us and will get us the best deal. America. I was gonna add and I’ve said this a few times: my cousin serves at Red Cloud near the DMZ. Haven’t heard from him in months but we understand..

It would be suicide for South Koreans if there was any reunification unless 10 years,or more,of work is done in the North.East Germany was 10 times more “prosperous” when the wall fell than North Korea is today.

“...$60 Trillion in minerals”

Where did you pull that number out of?

I think it would be a grave mistake to reunify. I think China, working through its servant NK, would proceed to turn SK commie and rob them of any and all natural resources and technology secrets.

They need to wait about 120 years before they can talk of reunification. The current generations need to die off, and their memories with them, before any talk can begin. I don’t believe it can happen now, or even in 10 years, because both sides will remain far too suspicious of each other. Add to that the North Koreans are decades behind the rest of the world.

Imagine telling a North Korean that in most of the world, you can criticize your government and not get thrown in prison for it? They wouldn’t believe you.

I’m sure I read $60 trillion but I could only find $10 trillion, which is still a huge number:

North Korea is sitting on $10 trillion mineral resources that it can’t tap

Red Cloud is closed from what I read. He might be at Camp Humphries where almost all troops will be stationed from now on.

why do you all want American money? Wasn’t 70 years of welfare enough? Sell some of that NK mineral wealth to pay for your reunification instead. We’re taking the nukes, now it’s up to you all to work out what a reunified Korea will look like. And don’t go all civil war. Nobody goes civil war anymore.

Before we allow $10 to $60 trillion of trade with North Korea, Kim Jong-un needs to vanish.

Unification will be a win win for the Koreas. Huge new markets, huge new resources, huge new labor pools...

But they cannot give the vote to the NKs all at once — that would be hugely disruptive. Maybe phase in the vote: First year, NKs under 19, second year, NKs under 21, third year, NKs under 23, etc. If things are going well, they can accelerate the process.

NK population is only half that of SK.

People will wonder why anyone was worried.
