Katy Tur defends 'a few misplaced words' by Blumenthal about Vietnam service
The Hill ^ | 10/01/18 | JOE CONCHA

MSNBC anchor Katy Tur defended Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) from President Trump's criticism this week, saying the senator "took full responsibility for what he called a few misplaced words" regarding his false claim that he served in Vietnam.

The defense comes as President Trump argued Monday that his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, was treated unfairly by Democratic senators and specifically Blumenthal during testimony before the Supreme Court Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

“Look at Blumenthal. Lied about Vietnam for 15 years, and he said he was a war hero,” Trump said to reporters in the Rose Garden. “He said he was Da Nang Richard.”

“He says we need honesty and we need integrity," Trump continued. "This guy lied. When he was the attorney general of Connecticut, he lied. I do not mean a little bit.”

After Tur played the clip of Trump's remarks on Blumenthal, she ran a fact check on their veracity.

"[Let's] fact check on what he said about Senator Blumenthal," Tur said on Monday afternoon during her MSNBC news hour. "He was claiming that Senator Blumenthal said that he served in Da Nang in Vietnam and bragged about serving in Da Nang in Vietnam but was lying about it and got caught about lying about it."

"Senator Blumenthal did say in 2010, according to a New York Times article from back then, that he served in Vietnam. Not that he served in Da Nang or any particular province, that he served in Vietnam," she continued.

"When he was confronted with the fact that he didn’t actually serve in Vietnam, he was only in the Marine reserve at time, he said, 'I meant the Vietnam era,' but took full responsibility for what he called a few misplaced words," Tur concluded.

Blumenthal's false Vietnam service claims came on eight different occasions over the course of the previous decade from 2003 to 2008, according to multiple other fact-checks, including in March 2008 when the then-Connecticut attorney general spoke at a ceremony honoring veterans.

“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Blumenthal said in Norwalk, Conn., at the time. “And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it — Afghanistan or Iraq — we owe our military men and women unconditional support.”

In 2003, Blumenthal said of soldiers returning from the Iraq War at a rally attended by 100 military families that, "When we returned [from Vietnam], we saw nothing like this. Let us do better by this generation of men and women.”

In 2010, Blumenthal, who received five military deferments before enlisting in the Marine Reserves, said he may have "misspoken" about his service but would not allow "anyone to take a few misplaced words and impugn my record of service to our country.”

“On a few occasions I have misspoken about my service, and I regret that and I take full responsibility,” Blumenthal said at news conference at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Hartford, Conn. “But I will not allow anyone to take a few misplaced words and impugn my record of service to our country.”

Hmmm

Wonder if anyone signed him in as a GUEST.

It was reported that the VFW Chapter in his area and/or CT VFW endorsed him..

If not mistaken, a POST or VFW can’t support a candidate, that is why they have PACS...

For this phony SOB to address Judge Cavanaugh with the ‘once you start with a lie.....etc etc.’ is pretty downright obnoxious.

It just would not do for me to be questioned by that ‘body’ as if one of the idiots asked me a question with that lead in I would have to say

“You mean like YOU and your USMC adventure”

Of course ‘they’ would call me a bully and I would probably get charged with ‘disrespecting a member of Congress’....BUT- as a man - how can one NOT defend himself when he is being cross-examined by a hypocrite and known liar OR/plagiarist/leaker/murderer/ etc etc)

Yes, they should not reinforce his delusion that he is a woman. Like Bruce Jenner, he is NOT and NEVER will be “a woman”.

Ah, a new one - “misplaced words” in addition to the old standbys “misinterpreted” and “taken out of context” - on the other hand, when Trump misplaced one word and said he didn’t know why Russia would have tried to influence our elections instead of he didn’t know why Russia wouldn’t have tried to influence our elections, it was time to impeach him......

Thanks to you and all of the other veterans from the Vietnam era. I was on active duty from 76-84. My first two platoon sergeants both served in Vietnam, and kept me grounded.

For example, I was fuming after we returned to our motor pool after a less than successful training exercise. My platoon sergeant pulled me aside, and said "LT, consider this: nobody died." That kind of brought me back to reality.

I also a first sergeant who did 3 tours in Nam, as an infantry first sergeant. During an ARTEP, I had to wear both hats as XO and Maintenance Officer. He came up to me and said, "LT, I don't know a damn thing about this ADA stuff."

I laughed and said, "you know how to set up a Company HQ, that's what we need." He was back in his element.

A few hours later, I saw him sitting on a stump with his head in his hands. Apparently, the CO screwed up a mission by sending out bad coordinates, yet he took it personally. I told him I'd handle it, we had an additional day to make up for it.

Those NCOs prepared me to lead when everything was turning to $hit. That evening, I laid out the plan for the next day, using colorful language and a very loud voice. I didn't know it, but the evaluation team chief heard every word.

I bumped into him after leaving the CP. He gave me a big smile and said, "that was beautiful." Like I said, those NCOs played a huge role in my development.

Getting back on topic, I hate it when someone embellishes their service. I mostly keep my stories to myself, as I know they're interesting only to me. lol, I had some great experiences and I was a pretty good officer.

Dishonest in one thing. Dishonest in all things.

Wasn't that last week's lesson?

Katy, Bloomie's a big boy.

He doesn't need you defending him.

It’s one thing to misplace words once and offer to correct your “misplacement”.

But do it over and over for years with out correction? That’s nothing but intentional, a.k.a. a planned lie

I served as a reservist during the Vietnam years.

I would never, ever refer to myself as a Vietnam veteran, EVER!

Years ago I thanked my older brother for his service in the army during Vietnam.

“Well - it was the Army reserves. But hey - we kept them out of New Jersey - so you’re welcome!”

We watched the movie “12 Strong” (on Netflix?) last night. About the first soldiers into Afghanistan - on horseback.

The Captain(?) that was hoping to lead his team of Special Forces didn't have any war-time experience. He gets grief from the Commander that is making the selection of the team. The Captain's answer sounds similar to your comments.

The Captain gets the same treatment from General Dostum that he joins up with.

Great movie. I have no idea how realistic it is.
