The Senate Judiciary Committee referred apparent false statements made to committee investigators alleging misconduct by Judge Brett Kavanaugh for criminal investigation on Saturday.
Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director Chris Wray seeking to have materially false statements made to the Committee as part of its investigation of allegations against Kavanaugh referred for criminal investigation.
In the letter, Grassley discussed the Committees investigation into various allegations made against Kavanaugh, which he noted has involved communicating with numerous individuals claiming to have relevant information.
While many of those individuals have acted in good faith in providing the Committee information during the investigation, unfortunately it appears some have not, Grassley said in the letter before providing Sessions and Wray with the name of the individual who made the apparent false statements.
The unidentified man in question who made the apparent false statement reportedly contacted Sen. Sheldon Whitehouses (D-R.I) staff on Monday to report an allegation of sexual misconduct against Kavanuagh, according to Grassleys letter.
The man claimed that in August of 1985, Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a close acquaintance of his on a boat in the harbor at Newport, Rhode Island.
As Grassley noted, the Committee took the allegation seriously and asked Kavanaugh numerous questions about it under penalty of felony during an interview on Tuesday. Kavanaugh denied the allegation.
On Wednesday, the Committee publicly released a redacted transcript of that interview, with the unidentified mans name redacted.
Afterwards, at 7:51 pm that same evening, [the man] 'recanted' and apologized for his allegation via social media, Grassley wrote. I have enclosed the relevant materials documenting these facts.
The Committee is grateful to citizens who come forward with relevant information in good faith, even if they are not one hundred percent sure about what they know, Grassley said in the letter. But when individuals provide fabricated allegations to the Committee, diverting Committee resources during time-sensitive investigations, it materially impedes our work. Such acts are not only unfair; they are potentially illegal.
It is illegal to make materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statements to Congressional investigators, he continued. It is illegal to obstruct Committee investigations.
Accordingly, in light of the seriousness of these facts, and the threat these types of actions pose to the Committees ability to perform its constitutional duties, I hope you will give this referral the utmost consideration, Grassley wrote.
That’s ball zee of them...
Whatta bout the False Russia dossier?
Shouldn’t the FIB be investigating that too?
Hopefully, this will throw some cold water on any future cock roach liars crawling out of the woodwork. Ramirez and Swetnick might also want to reconsider what they’re doing. The guy referred recanted and apologized, but it was too little, too late for Grassley & I can see more referrals coming up soon. Good for Chuck ... he’s pulled out the brass knuckles on this issue.
Excellent. Time to fight back and not let them getr away with lies and false accusations.
The scotus is key ... after that you will see the storm ... scotus must come first to prevail in the long game ... one step at a time ...
Agreed, Grassley is throwing down the gloves for future nominees.
Swear them all in, including Feinstein’s staff for leaking.
This is his Spartacus moment!
He has to lay down the gauntlet
Need to make an example of the clown in a hugh and series way.
We should thank Flake for making this happen hopefully to put a stop to these unfounded accusations. We need to prosecute someone to stop all these false allegations.
At least they’re publicly acknowledging this one particular piece of the greatest farce of all time. The lefty loons of this world know that causing BK to not get seated on the Supreme Court would make them liberal royalty with all of the benefits that entails. They’re jumping at the chance to be a hero.
Feinstein should be referred for ethics violations.
Someone has to be made an example of to prevent a flood of future false statements being made to Congress on nominations.
I think the “boat dude” just volunteered (for the good of the nation of course).
:>)
This should discourage any potential fantasizers, Soros operatives, nut cases, etc.
I hope the “gang rapist” accuser gets indicted.
Grassley made the right call by letting Democrats take their best shot. Now it's his turn. Investigations are like discovery and work both ways.
After this sinks in let's see if the Democrats are so eager to attack Kavanaugh next week.
No. You people still think the rule of law is in place, dontcha? Debate club rules? No. Federal laws are there to convict those who oppose the Swamp, not for Demonrats. They always skate, because the Media runs cover. This fellow will not be charged, and the Demonrats will never be dissuaded. Until death.
