Her bill, introduced in 2004, wouldve required parents, for the first time, to notify the state that their children were being homeschooled, have them complete the same annual tests as public school students, and submit proof of annual medical tests.
Soon afterward, a small group of homeschooling parents began following Weinberg around the capitol. The barrage of phone calls from homeschooling advocates so jammed her office phone lines that staffers had to use their private cellphones to conduct business. You would have thought Id recommended the end of the world as we know it, said Weinberg. Our office was besieged.
Sen Weinberg's desire for state control of children was disgusting then, and remains a stain on her record today.
My daughter home schools her children. I do think some guidelines should be in place, like actually seeing the children and I say this because there are evil parents out there who have pulled their kids out of school only to have been found tortured, beaten, starved, dead later. Maybe proof of life would be required doctor statement saying they have examined/seen the child etc.
