Georgetown Prep Fires Back at Allegations: Sexual Assault Not Tolerated at Kavanaugh's High School

After psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of attempting to rape her in high school, news reports have characterized the culture of Georgetown Preparatory School as "booze-soaked," even "misogynistic." Georgetown Prep, Kavanaugh's all-boys school, responded to these characterizations in a powerful statement on Wednesday.

The school admitted that teaching young men to live lives of virtue is difficult, but denied the ugly insinuations that Georgetown Prep has fostered a bad culture of drunkenness and sexual assault.

"The temptations, and the failings, presented in these stories are not unique to Georgetown Prep. The problems and abuses of alcohol and drugs, sexual assault and misconduct, emotional and physical violence toward others are real; educators at every institution of primary, secondary, or higher learning in our nation face these problems every day," the school admitted in the statement.

But the school has striven to raise boys to become "men for others."

"Jesuit schools, Georgetown Prep among them, have been working together since the 1970s to address these issues. We are proud of such documents as the Profile of the Graduate at Graduation which have guided our efforts on behalf of our students, their families, and our larger community for over 40 years," Georgetown Prep added.

"But it is demonstrably false that such behavior or culture is tolerated, still less encouraged, at Georgetown Prep," the school stated. "In fact, our curriculum is designed to guide students away from these malignant influences, and to guide them through reflection away from selfishness and towards a life of service for and with others."

Furthermore, the school uses discipline to keep the boys in line. "We empower our faculty and staff to administer our rules and policies strictly but compassionately," the statement added.

I am a Catholic all girls school alum (albeit on the West coast) and my brother boys school was a Jesuit school. I also have several family members who attended Georgetown University (not Prep but still) - And the above statement is in line with my observations of how people conduct themselves and the boundaries that exist even in liberal Catholic institutions as compared with secular ones: private school or otherwise.

There is an atmosphere difference between a religious prep school versus others.

One of Kavanaugh ‘a girlfriends said that they were always chaperoned. I don’the know if that is true or not, but it is as believable as any of Ford’s BS.

I went to private Catholic schools from 1st grade all the way through high school; the first public school I went to was in college.

Although ours was a co-ed high school, it was segregated (the girls were in one wing, we were in the other; the girls had their lunch period, we had ours at a different time). We didn’t “integrate” until my senior year (i.e., our senior class was integrated, but the other classes remained segregated).

Our priests were Jesuits, our nuns were, I think, SMJ.

Our son attended a private, all boys prep high school (not catholic). He was one of seventy five boys in his class. Our families were close, we were involved, the boys were academically and personally excellent. The school expected excellence, in fact if there was even a rumor of a beer party, there would have been consequences.

IF something like this assault, or party would have happened it would have been like a wildfire within a day. Everyone would have known it, parents, the school admin, the kids, everyone. IF there were wild boys who had “notorious” parties, everyone would have known it, obviously because they were “notorious”. Gang rape parties are just laughable, the reports would have been in our cities newspaper about the prep boys from (school name).

I spent six years at a so-called Non-Denominational junior/high school. (Non-Denom is a denomination unto itself: uneasy hybrid of Anabaptist and Calvinist/Reformed theology, with a dash of Pentecostal thrown in; a very few Lutherans and Catholics also, who are regarded as second- or third-class citizens - if not actual heretics. I was raised Lutheran; I got verbally “assaulted” by both students and teachers, demanding I, a 12-year-old, answer for my church’s theology.)

You are correct. There were some vile proto-womanizers there, but they could not get away with much while attending.

Students could be suspended or expelled based solely on off-campus hearsay. The teachers were sometimes naive, but the school was too small and strict for them to get away with much for long. Everyone literally knew, or knew of, everyone. Kind of like Hogwarts.

My older brother was popular, a womanizer, and a recidivist. He was suspended, then expelled, after just over one semester.

I was an unpopular math-and-science nerd, but everyone knew me by name (to my then surprise).

Thank you for sharing. Your school’s theology courses must have been intense from kindergarten!

I hope your older brother was able to shape up later on and that if he hasn’t, that he find his peace with God soon.
