Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrapped up his visit to the United Nations on Wednesday, and although he did not have a personal meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, he said not to “read into it.”
Trudeau was referring to an interaction between the two leaders at the annual UN General Assembly on Tuesday. The prime minister was greeting other leaders around a table Trump was sitting at, and after a few handshakes, he approached the president, who looked like he was reading notes on the toast he was about to give at the luncheon.
The two exchanged a quick handshake, but Trump did not stand up to greet Trudeau.
When asked about this during a media conference on Wednesday, Trudeau said: “I have continued to engage regularly with the president. We had a very good call just last week, we continue to have regular conversations whenever necessary, whenever we want to.”
He added that he does not think “there is anything to read into it.”
“I was thanking the president of South Africa for his extraordinary speech on Nelson Mandela and I moved around the table to say hello to the prime minister of Italy, and then shook hands with President Trump while he was re-reading his notes for his speech [for] the toast he was about to give,” Trudeau said.
The prime minister spent the last few days in New York mingling and shaking hands with global leaders in an effort to campaign for Canada to gain a temporary seat on the UN Security Council in 2021.
Although he met with several world leaders, he did not have a one-on-meeting with Trump during a time of ongoing uncertainty over trade deals between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
Prior to the New York trip, Trudeau said it was “very likely” that the U.S. and Canada would hold informal talks on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on the sidelines.
On Wednesday, Trudeau told reporters that Canada would not be rushed into renewing NAFTA, although time is running out before Washington will proceed with a Mexico-only deal.
“We will keep working as long as it takes to get to the right deal for Canada,” Trudeau told reporters when asked about the increasing U.S. pressure to wrap up the talks.
Trudeau also said the tariffs that Trump imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum in late May would have to be scrapped before Canada felt comfortable signing a new NAFTA.
I would argue that there is Tredeau and then there is Canada.

Trudeau is a punk who’s ‘real’ job was teaching primary school children before ascending to the leadership of the Liberal party that he swung way too far to the left, and he will soundly be defeated when the next election gives Canada the opportunity to correct their mistake of thinking that he was anything more than the pothead son of a former Prime Minister.

I don’t know. It seems there is a bit of Trudeau dynasty thing going on. The elder served for 15 years. JT has been PM since 2015. They seem to have had a lot of support in Canada to have accumulated those combined years in power.
He should have done that little dance he does and twirled his loose eyebrow.
Sure. LOL. The worst thing that happened is a member of the Conservative Party left and is starting his own conservative party. Even if he siphons off 5% of the conservative vote, the Conservative Party will lose the next election.
The other is Trump. Don’t get me wrong. He is the best thing for Americans. But he is so unpopular in Canada, Trudeau is smart to use Trump as a punching bag. It puts the Conservative in a tough spot. They don’t want to seem to be cozying up to Trump.
I read the British and Australian fairly regularly...but not so much the Canadian press.I know that DJT is wildly unpopular in Europe so it doesn't surprise me that he's unpopular up north as well.
No, you get weird looks, like you are some vile human being, if you say you like Trump. The man starting the new party is a good man, but he has to know this is going to do no one any good. Canada just is NOT conservative whatsoever. There is barely room for one conservative party. We have not one conservative think tank. We have a couple think tanks that lean conservative, but are not expressly so. Not a single conservative newspaper or news show. I would argue we are more liberal than we were 30 years ago.
Trump’s not much of one to stand on formalities and protocol, but he does know what they are and will use them for advantage. This wasn’t an accident.
