Russia's S-300 Play in Syria Is Creating Geopolitical Waves

Russia says it will supply Syria with a version of the S-300 air and missile-defense system, despite objections from Washington and Tel Aviv. The Kremlin made the decision to supply Damascus with the potent air-defense system after a Syrian S-200 surface-to-air missile battery mistakenly shot down a Russian Ilyushin Il-20M Coot-A intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft during an Israeli raid on Assad regime forces on September 17.

The Kremlin has decided to supply the Syrian regime with the potent S-300 because Moscow blames Israel for the downing of its Il-20M despite the fact that it was a Syrian-operated weapon that brought the four-engine turboprop down. The Russians accuse Tel Aviv of using the lumbering ISR plane as cover during an air raid by four Israeli F-16 fighters on a Syrian regime target.

“A modern S-300 air defense missile system will be supplied to the Syrian Armed Forces within two weeks,” Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu said on September 24, as reported by the state-owned TASS news agency. “It is capable of intercepting air assault weapons at a distance of more than 250 kilometers and hit simultaneously several air targets.”

Should Iran be targeted by the S-300, all will be well.

Russia has no reason to accommodate us at this point.

Our presence there is not legal; theirs is. Our justifications for being there are as obvious lies as the Ford rape hoax. We have repeatedly run the false chemical attack scam and given the middle finger in response to conclusive evidence that these scams were scams.

The US Congress, when given the opportunity to authorize war in Syria, declined to do so - as did other (then-)allies such as the UK. According to the War Powers Act, US intervention in Syria became unlawful after 90 days. AUMF legality arguments are nothing more than a claim that Congress has the power to cede its own power to declare war to the Executive, which would represent a fundamental change in our form of government to what would essentially be rubber-stamp despotism.

Either state a clear national security interest in unambiguous terms and gain the support of the American people and a declaration of war from Congress, or get the hell out.

S-300 discriminate F.O.F aircraft?

In most instances, effectively yes.

S300 has a much larger range in which depth perceptive radar bands can differentiate multiple targets in close formation from a single larger target.

This is not FOF ID, but serves as such.

Very interesting, Comrade - so you think that Russia is supposed to be in Syria?

How about the Ukraine?

Thought so.

Russia was invited in by the lawful government, so yeah they have at least as much right to be there as we have to be in Germany.

Surprised that you find the notion even slightly controversial, that being in a country at the invitation of the government, and being there against the will of the government, are equivalent. Do you also take that philosophy when illegals invade our nation without our government’s permission?

So how about Ukraine? Was it lawful for Hillary Clinton to engineer a coup there, in your opinion? Same goes for Libya too?

It depends on which generation the Russians supply. The Israelis have trained against an older Greek S-300PMU-1.

A prediction:
Prediction: S-300 battery will show up at Syrian airfield via An-124. Video up the wazoo of Syrians sitting at consoles etc. From that point on that single battery will be ran by Russians or will disappear in a matter of days. - Tyler Rogoway (@Aviation_Intel) September 24, 2018

Translation: “disappear in a matter of days” means via Israeli munitions.

there was another such report recently, but I very much doubt Putin will dare do it

he is smart man so he knows that the IDF will HAVE to remove any such new weaponry so close to Israel

(and even if he didn’t realize this, surely Jerusalem has so advised him)

imho, it ain’t gonna happen

Hard to say for sure, but the official Russian position is that they will supply the S300 and probably one of the newest variants, as they coordinate with one another and the S400.

This will render the target selection they want. Certainly the systems will be Russian manned for at least 18 months, and it would be unwise for Israel to target a Russian manned installation, allowing the system component units are remote from one another, they will likely lose aircraft, unless they launch dozens of missiles on numerous Russian installations.

Politically, Russia has stopped international political cooperation since 2014 and the recognition of "Arab Spring" destabilization, and is moving from bureaucratic responses to preparedness and application of force, and may move to anger.

Although unwise, it could be convincing.

And the S-300 isn’t even the top of the line. The S-400 is. Also rumors of a S-500 in the works.

Agree with thoughtomator.

I fully support Israel, but, in this case they did use the IL20 as a screen to attack the Syrian position. They counted on the Syrian’s being smart enough to not fire at their F-16 with the IL20 in the flight path. They were wrong and as a result there are now 20 dead Russians and an incensed Russia.

If the S-300 is the only action Putin takes he will have shown great restraint as the Russian media is going nuts and criticizing him for being weak.

Israel needs to back off a bit and we need to get the hell out of Syria (or better, negotiate switching our support to Assad in order to return to the status quo - the brutal suppression of militant non-alawite muslims).

If we could realistically replace Assad with a better alternative maybe I could consider supporting our actions there. Unfortunately, taking him down will only lead to a power vacuum and chaos eventually leading to a far more militant Islamic leader.
