The Trump administration formally announced late Saturday a long-anticipated proposal to change a public rule to potentially favor legal immigrants in the United States who are applying for green cards and those applying to enter the country on visas who have not used or do not have plans to use public benefits, including Medicaid, food stamps, and public housing.
Under long-standing federal law, those seeking to immigrate to the United States must show they can support themselves financially, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement. This proposed rule will implement a law passed by Congress intended to promote immigrant self-sufficiency and protect finite resources by ensuring that they are not likely to become burdens on American taxpayers.
Foreigners applying for or renewing visas who receive or would likely receive certain public benefits would be "generally ineligible" for admission or an extension to stay.
The rule is expected to be published in the Federal Register in the next few weeks. The public will then have 60 days to comment on the proposal.

Don’t think so...if it is it’s been ignored for decades.
Well we know everything Trump attempts will be resisted....even thing that aren’t happening!
Yes they have......you can blame past administrations for that.
Well YES INDEEDY. That’s how it was for my great-grands. AND they couldn’t be criminals or sick. Gee, cull the herd, that’s how you do it.
ABOUT DAMNED TIME!!!
Common sense dictates this. We have to stop the giveaway programs.
Yup, when we came in 1952 we had to have an American sponsor our family of four, who would take care of us financially, medically, etc., for five years, if need be. Fortunately, there was no need. We owe him a great debt of gratitude for taking that risk on...we were not related.
Free Traitors and Cheap Labor on the right and socialists the left like it this way.
Like every other country on earth
Including ours. On my spouses green card app I had to certify that I would provide support for 3?? maybe 5 years. That was 10 years ago.
I thought they cut it off completely (they aren’t accepting immigrants from the USA)?
This won’t be popular - it makes too much sense.
Well, they have borders to specify they are countries...

Amazing that......
I have a Jewish friend who survived the war by being put off a train, taken in by a rural family prearranged to meet her and then applying to immigrate after the war. The quota to the United States had been filled, so she settled for an available slot for Brazil where she waited until a U.S. visa became available.
No free rides in those days, not even for a few months.
