Wow, I think you’re right. It’s all over the web that he has to be confirmed by Oct 1st to hear cases so I don’t get the confusion but will attempt to find out.

October 1st is an obvious date for a new justice to be seated because it coincides with the start of a new court term.

But there's nothing magical about that date when it comes to REQUIRING justices to be seated. Scalia didn't wait until the end of a court term to die in his sleep, did he? :-)
