It’s 2 or 3 or maybe 4 Republicans screwing up the deal.

I don’t disagree with you on that point. But there is a underlying weakness that runs through the GOP. They do not have a winning mindset. They are too quick to appease. This is something that is deeply embedded in the party’s DNA.
Even Donald Trump is having a tough time trying to change the party and instill a winning mindset in them.
Most all always play defense. Follow the boss’ lead.
“Even Donald Trump is having a tough time trying to change the party and instill a winning mindset in them.”
I think lack of a winning mindset is part of the problem, but there is another dynamic as well: the Democrat party has successfully branded itself as the party of victims, underdogs, minorities, the weak, the vulnerable, the disadvantaged and the disenfranchised.
The analogy may be sexist, but they are like the weaker party in the same sense that females are known as the weaker sex.
It’s actually a pretty good analogy, because I remember in the third grade some of the girls were a foot taller than us boys and could kick our asses, but we were still supposed to stand there and not fight back.
It seemed unfair at times, and some girls purposely took advantage - but I think it represents a good and healthy instinct in decent society - the strong protect the weak.
As with some of the third grade girls (and sometimes my older sister), the Democrats and especially the so-called feminists take unfair advantage of a protective instinct.
Yes, the republicans are being soft on this pathetic accuser, but purposely so. It’s the cross we have to bear as “the stronger party”. And yes, the Democrats are cynically playing us like a fiddle, but to a certain extent, I’m OK with that.
Let her have her extended deadlines - let the republicans bend over backwards. It’s all good if Kavanaugh gets confirmed, which I think he will.
