A Wayne County Commissioner on Tuesday unveiled a plan for new limits, taxes, mental screening and background checks on the sale of ammunition.
District 6 Commissioner Reggie Reg Davis, a radio host who entered politics after his brother was fatally shot, announced the multi-pronged proposal at a press conference held at his familys mausoleum space.
In addition to calling on more controls nationally, the measure would mandate local regulations that would include a mental illness and background check certified by law enforcement prior to each bullet sale with police handling the transfer.
Were up against some state and federal laws. Even if it takes me going to lobby in D.C., and I expect it will, we need to make these changes, Davis, a Democrat, told The Detroit Free Press.
Besides a limit on sales and the expanded checks, Davis plans to include a special tax on the sale of ammunition to pay for the measure. Previous taxes on bullets in Seattle, Washington, and Cook County, Illinois have resulted in lengthy court challenges from retailers and Second Amendment groups.
Davis plans to submit the fleshed out proposal to commissioners next month and says he considers it a model that can be replicated nationwide. Well known in the community, he is the founder of CeaseFire Youth Initiative, a group that us

“doing a land office business”
Maybe this is an expression simply meaning, “making a very profitable business of”...?
The expression is new to me. Or...maybe it’s not an expression but has something to do with an actual land office..?
:/

“The expression is new to me. Or...maybe its not an expression but has something to do with an actual land office..?”
It’s an expression that grew out of the Oklahoma land rush and to a lesser extent the one that took place later in Nevada east of Reno when the Lahontan Dam was built and the immediate area was opened up to homesteading. My wife’s grandparents were too young to get land in Oklahoma so they came West to Northern Nevada to lay claim to “government” land in Fallon, NV. As it happens, we were in Fallon last weekend, and there were a lot of Californians purchasing their ammunition there, hence the term “land office business.”
Ah!
Very cogent explanation, thank you.
I love learning arcana like this, awesome..!
Wouldn’t it be better if only the Police Sold Drugs and eliminate the turf wars altogether??
Then the police would be the cartel. Hanging bodies from bridges and fighting each other for control of interstate routes.
The police wouldn’t have time for
this, and would have to limit sales
of bullets (cartridges) to Tuesday
and Thursday, between the hours of
2:00pm and 3:00pm. Closed on weekends
and holidays.
