This San Antonio-based website is saying that engine failure is suspected: https://woai.iheart.com/alternate/amp/2018-09-20-engine-failure-listed-as-cause-of-tuesday-usaf-trainer-crash/

At least nobody was hurt. We’ve seen worse.

Dumb reporting as it was a modern T-6 Texan II turbo prop basic trainer on active Air Force duty. Some might think it was the old WWII trainer that you bail out of and not eject from.

I could see them using these at the AF Academy, but am somewhat surprised to know they’re still active in the AF in general.

That’s what I thought at first. Have a friend that works on one at Meacham.

They are fairly new. They are used to instruct new instructor pilots.

The T-6 does not eject the crew. One must wear a parachute. In the event of a stall, one hears (or says) the word “Bail” three times. Then the “crew” (one or two people) unbuckle their seat belts, open the canopy, and JUMP, trying to stay as far from the aircraft as possible before pulling the ripcord.
Believe me. I know.

That’s what I thought too.
I have flown the WW2trainer.

I wonder if they did it in memory of John S. McCain.

Different T-6 from the WWII era trainer.
To: Mr.Unique
Well, I’ll be.
Thanks for the update.

I thought it was the WW2 T-6 Trainer. I stand corrected. The one I flew was the one I described.

And you bailed anytime you stalled?
No attempted recovery?
Ok.

Thanks, by the way, for the cool picture. Does anyone have any idea why they would give it the same name as the WW2 plane? (I am asking sincerely, not looking for trouble! LOL)
