A case of mistaken identity?

Yesterday, word circulated in certain quarters of the D.C. legal/public policy community that the assault allegation against Brett Kavanaugh may be a case of mistaken identity. In other words, the incident happened, but the perpetrator wasn’t Kavanaugh.

In the version I heard, the assault was committed by a guy who attended the Landon School, not Georgetown Prep where Kavanaugh was a student. Landon and Georgetown Prep are both elite prep schools in the prosperous Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C.

Having no idea whether this information is reliable, I wrote nothing about it. I was struck, however, by this tweet by Ed Whelan from last night:

By one week from today, I expect that Judge Kavanaugh will have been clearly vindicated on this matter. Specifically, I expect that compelling evidence will show his categorical denial to be truthful. There will be no cloud over him.

I’ve known Ed for years and have read “Bench Memos” regularly since its inception. He’s a pretty cautious guy, and not prone to wishful thinking. Thus, I was surprised by the boldness of his tweet.

This may be the next whispers, that is, "our clever ploy didn't work, so sorry, it wasn't him after all. It was some other drunk boy."

Kavanaugh has a ton of character witnesses.

Its possible he has a dark side, a secret life no one knows about but its extremely unlikely.

If anyone has uncovered any wrongdoing on his part since high school, I bet they’ve looked and come up empty.

He is by all accounts a decent man and nothing contradicts that picture.

Republicans are to be disqualified based on unprosecuted, unprovable, and largely unremembered, and alleged, HS misconduct......

Hmmmmmm.....Democrat hitmen sure like to engage in “Republican-bashing.”

They seem to have a complete collection of “Stop The Republicans” fables.

No need to actually “prove” anything.

Just put it out there and watch the Republicans squirm.

Two things I’ve wondered from the beginning that I don’t hear a lot about:

1. It is repressed memories. I’ve had experience with a woman claiming repressed memories decades after the event in question and it turned out that what they really were were FALSE memories.
2. In her 2012 session, the notes show the claim, but no name is attached to it. It makes me wonder if it did happen but she didn’t know who it was. This allows her to “imagine” who it was and, over years that imagination can become her sincere reality.

So my belief is that either this is a bunch of baloney, or it did happen but, based on the character evidence and results of six FBI investigations, it wasn’t him.

BTW, in health insurance threads I’ve used, for years, the example of my daughter breaking her left arm and it being handled from beginning to end by a local clinic for $275 in the mid-90’s. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I talked to my daughter about it a couple of months ago and she said, “no, Dad. It was my right leg.”

Evidence really can trump memory. This is why people who witness a dramatic event can have contradictory recollections.

So if Republican males are tagged as sexual harassers and rapists, I guess that means only Democrats are eligible for public service.

The minute you suggest alcohol was available....that this young lady was often noted at parties drunk...then the story becomes a joke. I might even go and ask when she finally realized her problem with alcohol and did rehab of some type.

I worked with an Air Force NCO who went off to Korea for a year and returned...new assignment in Arizona and got his family all situated. Four months later, he wakes up to realize the 15-year old daughter is passed out in the yard (dumped there by her friends from partying). For eighteen months, this kid had been on a drinking binge deal. Base sent her through two rehab situations, and finally they paid some ‘camp’ to take her for 90 days of serious rehab.

I see this gal as being someone who I can’t believe the story told because of the drunken state she was normally in.

A convenient out for the DIMS—especially Feinswine—since this seems to be blowing up in their faces rather badly.

Too bad about Kavanaugh’s reputation, though.

This article is stupid. It’s rank speculation.

If any incident took place, it took place 35 years ago when both were teenagers. There is no way of knowing what the truth is.

Grassley has offered a chance for both people to tell their story, but as of this morning the woman doesn’t want to, and the democrats are using her reluctance to testify as proof that the GOP are a bunch of misogynists. Meanwhile, they want to deny the accused man the basic civil rights of due process, facing one’s accuser, and the assumption of innocence until proven guilty.

The Democrat Party hates men.

So if Republican males are tagged as sexual harassers and rapists, I guess that means only Democrats are eligible for public service.

That's the goal. The indoctrination of our society to internalize the double-standards, hypocrisy, etc. to enable that mode of thinking has been in process for fifty years or more. I would point to the Bork hearings as a clear acceleration.

Several points to make here ...

The Democrats are playing to their base - especially women voters. Even if Kavanaugh is confirmed, with the massive and FREE MSM non-critical coverage of this accusation, they win votes as evidenced by the polling.

The polling helps drive this as they see no negative to drawing this out as long as they can. Political ads do cost money, but when they can get the LEFTist MSM to do it as ‘news’, it is free!

There will never be an admission from the LEFT that this has been political, just as they have never been sorry for any ‘dirty trick’ they have committed. From Robert Bork, Clarence Thomas to Harry Reid’s 2016 calumny against Romney for unpaid income tax to Bush’41 and the SR-71 flight to Paris, they play this as a blood sport and win because the popular culture is consistently LEFTist.

It’s not mistaken identity—that’s being far too charitable. It’s an callous attempt to destroy a man’s character for political purposes.

the suspicion is that her 2012 “note” to her analyst was to go after Kavanaugh should Romney have won the 2012 election (apparently Kavanaugh’s name was already being floated as a court pick).

I was the "victim" of such a mistake...wife was told i was seen getting cozy with an Asian woman...turned out I had a doppelganger on the base I was stationed at, that looked just like me when in uniform form 10 feet away....who was married to that Asian woman.

I doubt it's mistaken identity though - she knows it wasn't Kavanaugh, even if it did happen..

The wife of the time decided to do some spying and thought she saw what her girlfriend had told her...approached the couple and got a surprise...
