My father was made a guest of the Wehrmacht during the Battle of the Bulge, after his division helped throw off the German timetable for Hitler’s last offensive in the West.
The 28th Division paid a high price for the delay, but the newspapermen were in Bastogne with the more glamorous, and equally heroic, story of the refusal of the surrounded Airborne to surrender. The story of those outnumbered infantrymen refusing to yield, outnumbered and outclassed by German heavy armor, isn’t told much today.
He wouldn’t talk much about combat, but he’d share stories of his time as a “Kreigie”, and my favorite was the one about the German officers inspecting his POW barracks, and how this big fat old German Sergeant would throw the door open, holler “ACHTUNG!” and stand at attention while the officers poked and prodded, looking for contraband or evidence of escape efforts.
When the officers left, the Sergeant would glare haughtily at the American prisoners, and make a great show of slamming the door shut...and on the back of the door a silk map with a rude nickname, showing the latest positions of the allied advance gained from crystal radio sets, would flutter briefly while the GI’s grinned at each other.
Thank you canteen for remembering.
Good evening, Pro, and thanks for the link.
Did you have a good work day? Ready for your long day?
Howdy LUV.
Did you have a fantabulous time at Yellowstone today?
Happy Yom Kipper!!
We thank you for your service to our county.
It was great! We saw Old Faithful and of course lots of beautiful rivers, lakes and scenery.
We ate supper at Dornan’s which is right behind the web cam view. The Grill was closed so we ate at the pizza and pasta restaurant and it was yummy!
And the STARS!!!! They are fantastic up here for real!
Good evening, radu...what a good graphic. Thanks!
The heat giving you a break yet? We might be getting rain this weekend and early next week. We are dipping into the mid 40s at night now.
Sounds like a grand day! I envy you getting to see the beauty of Yellowstone.
Pizza to cap off the day sounds mighty fine too. :-)
Bet the stars are almost overwhelming up there based on some of the cam views.
Hey there, Kathy.
No, no break from the heat yet. It’s getting hotter! 94 when I went to the grocery store this afternoon and tomorrow is supposed to be hotter still. Supposedly we’ll cool off next week after a cold front comes through over the weekend. Might get a little rain out of the deal but we’ll see.
Glad we won’t have lows in the 40s like you’re getting. Not quite ready for that! LOL
I hope you get some rain. It’s been a while and you need it!
There is a huge WILDFIRE south of here in the Hobart area that created tons of smoke in Jackson this morning. The smell gave my son a headache and had my sinuses going bigtime! Not sure if it's anyway near being put out....it was 0 contained on Tuesday.
Today was wall to wall....but I got all my stuff done. It’s not a pay week, and we get most of the afternoon to work on stuff, but a bunch of “fires” popped up just before posting time.
I had to post and run.
Boss will be here Friday. *sigh* I did get some good news as Ruthe and I walked to our cars....our temp spent all day working on Ruthe’s stacked up backup paperwork. Ruthe said she said she loved that kind of stuff. Boy, do I have a lot of that. It will be a HUGE relief to get that kind of help with the stacks of papers I have. We get the essentials done, but no time to get the backup paperwork into its final places (HR and auditors and such will look at it/ask for it at times).
If need be, I can post the Friday thread. Just let me know ahead of time, since we also fly home Friday morning and will arrive in Texas at about 5:30pm CDT.
50 degrees isn’t THAT cold. Chilly but that’s what coats are for. LOL! This must be one of those months that the moon’s close to earth. I noticed last night that even at the half-moon stage it’s bright.
Bummer about the two wildfires. They’re quite a ways off and still that thick in Jackson? Ugh! I hope they’re able to get them contained soon.
Something was burning close to us this evening. The air was thick with cedar smoke and had my sinuses thumping when I made a quick Wal Mart run. Had to get milk because Food Lion’s shelves were empty this afternoon. They get all their milk from NC farmers and the hurricane fouled that up for now.
With your boss showing up it’s a good thing it isn’t a pay week. You have enough on your plate getting ready for her visit. Good that you were able to get all your stuff done today, even with the “fires”.
Oh boy! You need to put your claim in on the temp’s time! LOL! That would be a HUGE help! It would be soooo nice to not have that stuff hanging over your head, wouldn’t it?
We thank both you and your Dad for your service to our country.
Good morning, Luv....yes, praying for their return.
More fun today?
