What saved Clarence Thomas was that he refused to wilt in the face of such tremendous pressure, and insisted on appearing quickly before the Judiciary Committee to defend himself. His opening statement in his post-Hill testimony will go down in history as one of the greatest repudiations of a group of Senators that you’ll ever see.

Yes but his high tech lynching theme went directly to race and the history of blacks being lynched. He shamed the Senate. In the end he had to use race against the Rats in one of the greatest statements ever given by a nominee and of course Kavanaugh lacks that weapon.
Dems may have miscalculated badly here. Even the swing voters...."I was really drunk at the time and couldn't walk well, and I can't remember what day or month it was, and I never saw that guy again, and we didn't go to the same school...but I know it was him!"
versus
"I was never at any party remotely like that in high school, and I can state categorically that is untrue. Perhaps she was impaired and does not remember the details completely accurately. But I know for certain that was not me.
Given that most people are going to view 35 year old allegations made by a drunk 15 year old against a guy as sketchy right from the start, and that she has admitted both that she was impaired and that she cannot remember many details, I think most people are going to give him the benefit of the doubt.
And they're going to think the way this all happened was skeevy as heck.
