London mayor Sadiq Khan has called for another referendum on Britain’s European Union membership, saying the prime minister’s handling of Brexit negotiations had become “mired in confusion and deadlock” and was leading the country down a damaging path. […]
The backing of Khan, a member of the main opposition Labour party, for a second referendum will put more pressure on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to change his opposition to the idea when the party meets for its annual conference in a week’s time.
A second referendum, dubbed a “people’s vote” by its proponents, is not Labour party policy, although finance spokesman John McDonnell said last month that no option should be off the table.
London backed remaining in the EU in the June 2016 referendum that went in favor of leaving.
Khan said Britain was now facing either a bad deal or a no-deal Brexit, both of which were “incredibly risky”. …

Libs do that all the time. A sales tax increase was voted down here, so the city raised property taxes. Now they are scheduling a second vote on raising the sales tax, and telling people they will be “forced” to raise property taxes again if it doesn’t pass. Isn’t this extortion?

Article 50, interestingly enough, states that states that have completely left the union and want to rejoin have to go through the same rigmarole they did when first joining; although Article 49 just has two paragraphs, cites a number of bureaucratic requirements having to do with “eligibility” and of course setting out a nebulous “agreement” with the individual state.
Article 50 gives all the advantage to the EU anyhow. It’s like when the USSR’s constitution said that any member of the USSR could “freely secede”. If Theresa May was in any way like Margaret Thatcher, she could have put together several pieces of evidence of the EU’s malfeasance and declared “rebus sic stantibus”, thus rendering the Treaty of Lisbon invalid.
