On Sept. 12, European Parliament voted for the Copyright Directive. This updating of online copyright tries to make certain media companies and publishers are paid for their work when shared on Facebook or YouTube and aggregated by such sites as Google News.
Articles 11 and 13 of this law has been harshly criticized both by internet experts and companies. Article 11 grants publications copyright over any online content sharing. In practice, this means sites could charge services like Hacker News and Reddit for aggregating their stories. This is being called a link tax.
Article 13 requires content sharing sites to deploy "effective content recognition" technology to filter out copyright-protected content. This requires any content-sharing site to scan any shared videos, music, images, etc., for copyright violations.

This “link tax” would destroy FR.
It would, if it were in the EU.
America’s European competitors are being shut down by the EU because they are totalitarian idiots.
That’s the point.
It would also mean downloading copyrighted content for private use would be illegal.
I see an upsurge in VPN use.
I heard of this thing called “The Dark Net” - what’s that all about?
The link tax seems to apply to copyrighted material. How will you-tube deal with it?
German fascism alive and well.
The dark net is the nasty part of the TOR net. TOR it’s self, or the deep net as it’s called is not as bad as they make it out to be. Most government agencies and the military use it. Along with thousands of business networks because of the security. Problem is it is wide open with absolutely no registration or guidelines. So unfortunately there is also some very illegal stuff in there too. Surfing responsibly and with discretion is a good practice.
Wouldn’t this be a double edged sword? I have bookmarked many sites simply because I was led to them by FR or Drudge. I may never have learned of their existence otherwise. Aggregation is free advertising.
THis is an anti-free speech law. But then Europe was never into that freedom thing to begin with.
Not that I need it, I’m just the curious sort. Thanks.

Birthplace of fascism and communism. And the Belgian bureaucrat.
Lets take back our DNS servers and chop the cord between the US and Europe.
It is only a matter of time before some international “Authority” starts blocking sites like freerepublic in the name of “hate speech” or “fake news”.
The Tor browser can be used to navigate the dark Internet.
Some people prefer privacy and don’t like to be snooped on.
You can avoid being tracked by using Tor and VPN.
They do not care.
The point is to shut down any dissent, any communication, other than pictures of cats, recipes, and banking transactions.
Then FR will go the tor route.
Leftist censorship will mean nothing when conservative sites cant be found and blocked, let alone banned.
A) Did we not relinquish control of DNS services and other internet infrastructure under Obama? Did we not shriek in indignation because this was likely to set up foreign censorship of American voices?
B) How many minutes after Democrats (and/or Establishment Republicans) take control before these laws come to America?
