Hurricanes that hit near me always drop to tropical storms soon before hitting, but from what I’ve seen, the vast amount of damage occurs within 1-2 miles of the shoreline.
You don’t need to evacuate 300 miles. Go see a friend or hang out at your church.
I helped with Hurricane Sandy cleanup a couple weeks after the storm. Mainland damage was negligible while the barrier islands were decimated.
(I'd evacuate my wife and kids. And make sure my life insurance was paid up. If I had beachfront property, I'd ask a friend more inland who is also staying if I could come over with a couple of cases of beer.)

I have been intimately familiar with hurricane zone building codes.
When you observed the videos from Key west last year, it was easy to distinguish code from non code construction. As a matter of fact, to show destruction, they videoed trailer parks. even there, many were properly tied down and survived.

Maybe people should do that when they ride in their cars since over 30,000 people die in traffic accidents in the US each year. Very few die in hurricanes, usually zero.
Give her a waterproof magic marker so she can put her SS# on her arm or forehead. She should be held accountable if she endangers her children.

If she makes it through the initial winds, she might very well be safer at Carolina Beach, rather than stuck in the flooding farther inland. Lots more people will be in danger from the flooding.

If the ‘news’ wouldn’t over sensationalize every storm I believe people would be able to make more informed decisions on preparing for it or evacuating.
I agree. The only issue is that frequently in these instances folks decide they made a mistake and scream for uncle government to come save them after all.
