In any disaster like a major hurricane, the government assistance is only as good as the local governor and state authorities can make it. Texas recovered from her hurricane last year because they had competent people in place to deal with it. Puerto Rico did not because their local authorities were inept. If there was a lesson to be learned from last year it’s that FEMA and the Feds need to be ready to step in and provide more assistance when the local authorities are unable to hold up their end of things.
local authorities were inept
Corrupt is more like it
From a humanitarian perspective I agree, but those officials were elected by the people of Puerto Rico. If they are inept the people have recourse to the ballot box. They have not chosen well for a long time. They have the government they deserve. In short, stupid should hurt.
“Puerto Rico did not because their local authorities were inept.”
Inept and/or corrupt

In short, stupid should hurt. - 17th Miss RegtThe same situation as Katrina - the mayor of NO and the governor of LA werent up to the task, and the unijournalism establishment used both NOLA and now PR to bludgeon Republican presidents with. Where were the reporters when the supplies from FEMA were warehoused in PR and not distributed by the PR authorities?Should Bush and Trump have declared martial law in order to take over the local distribution of relief efforts?
Trump describes the PR electric company as a complete basket case, financially, managerially, and in the quality of so-called infrastructure it disposes. Says it wasnt functional even before the hurricane.
