A Dallas police officer returning home from work shot and killed a neighbor on Thursday after she mistook his apartment for her own, police said.
The Dallas Police Department said in a news release on Friday the officer had arrived at her apartment complex in uniform after working a shift. She called dispatch to report the shooting and told responding officers she believed the victims apartment was her own when she entered it.
It was not immediately clear how the officer got inside the apartment or what led to the shooting.
"I won't go into that information right now," Sgt. Warren Mitchell, a spokesman for the police department, said. "I mean, we have not interviewed her, and like I said this is just a preliminary statement. We still have a lot to do in this investigation. ... This is all we can give you at this time."
The victim was identified as Botham Shem Jean, 26, FOX 4 News reported. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"Super scary because the police are supposed to protect you and then they come home and, you know, you're just hanging out in your own house and then they come home thinking they're home or whatever. I don't know if she was tired but that's pretty scary," Richard Healy Nelson, who lives in the complex where the shooting occurred, told FOX 4 News.
"It's terrible. I hope it's just a tragic accident and nothing more than that," Tomiya Melvin, who lives nearby, told Dallas News. "This area appealed to me because it always seemed so safe, and so far it has been. But I won't be leaving my door unlocked anymore, that's for sure."

? Did they have identical furniture & décor?
Only “trained” law enforcement can be trusted with firearms / s
My first thought as well.
Must’ve been furnished apartments. :-D
I suspect this is just her claim. I wonder if there was animosity between them.

I am on the side of law enforcement... but this is sounding kinda fishy.
Was the police officer high on drugs or drunk? You live in an apartment or house for awhile you pretty much navigate to the right door by autopilot. An d even if by some chance you got distracted or turned around and opened the door to another apartment, your first reaction should be, this isn’t right; it shouldn’t be pulling a gun and shooting the first person you see,
Make that very fishy...
?????
Have a funny feeling that it will be eventually reported that they use to date.
‘Botham Shem Jean, whose nickname was Bo, comes from a prominent family in Saint Lucia. According to St. Lucia Times, Jean was the son of Allison Jean, described as former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and sustainable Development and Bertram Jean, who was a store supervisor for Water and Sewerage Company Inc., known as WASCO. His uncle, Ignatius Jean, is Chief Executive Officer of the Caribbean Water and Sewerage Association Inc. (CAWASA) and former government Minister and Parliamentarian, St. Lucia Times reported.’

Remember those funny posters that briefly appeared in Minneapolis after Officer Jihad hauled off and dropped Justine Damond with a single shot?
They said “WARNING: TWIN CITIES POLICE EASILY STARTLED.”
Perhaps something similar could be distributed to the people who live in this officer’s apartment building. They could display it on their doors.
You’re kidding ... Right?
THIS IS THE GUY WHO GOT KILLED>>>>>

I know what you're getting at, but it reminded me of a Stand Up comedian who said that he came home to find that all his furniture had been stolen - and replaced with identical items.
Newscaster...”What are the odds? Investigators discover a matching Velvet Elvis hanging on the same wall in each apartment. Details at eleven.”
The article says her key was in the lock, but it didn’t open the door. I’m going to guess that the deceased heard someone trying to unlock the door, and then opened it and some type of altercation took place there at the doorway.
Nope. It is murder, plain and simple. Bad training (know your target before shooting) resulting in murder, not an accident. Hold these cops accountable, before more innocents die.
Nope. I do generally support the cops in this BLM/MS13/psycho mass shooting era.
BUT something is very fishy about her story.
Even if she walked into her apt and found someone, you don’t just blaze away. She’s lying about something.
